Title: ADC suggestions
Post by: Youneverno41 on June 23, 2005, 12:58:47 PM
Hey guys, im finally starting to gather up money and im looking for my rig.  I foudn some mics, power, gain, and storage all within my price range, and I'm having trouble finding an ADC.  What do you guys use, and what is considered decent/better than average?

http://www.mytekdigital.com/ has great ADCs(ive heard) couple use em here, and say they are really top notch. A lot of us use the sony sbm-1 , which seems to be great as well. I think there may be one for sale in the Yard Sale??

We need to know, at minimum

[1] what other gear you'll use
[2] budget
[3] open or stealth

I'm probably gonna be choosing between AKG C1000s or ADK SC-1, I dont really have an exact amount I want to spend, I'll spend money on something that works and does the job, and its gonna be an open rig

we need a budget bud. A number amount. approximate is ok. I threw those two companies out there because as you can see they really span the price range. So whats your limit??

Still need a full answer to these questions:

[1] what other gear will you use:  mics (got 'em from above), mic power / gain / preamp, recorder
[2] $$$ budget

Both a $20 or $2,000 ADC might "do the job", that's why we need an actual budget and the gear listing so we may make an appropriate recommendation.

Mic Power- Walmoart Li-on Bat, Gain-Sp-spsb-1, storage-Nomad Jukebox 3.  Id spend 100-300 on the ADC

If you're doing only open taping i'd highly suggest you looking into a ua5 for the preamp and adc.  loads of people use it with the jb3 and speak very, very highly of it.  i don't know what they run used but it's not absurd.
let's say your budget is 1K - then maybe 300 for a used digimod ua5(total guess on my part), 150 maybe for the used jb3 and you've got a lot of dough left over for the most important part, mics.  i could be way off on prices, and i am guessing at your budget.
yeah, 1000 is about the total. And sorry with all the questions, what the jb3?

nomad jukebox 3 = jb3 for short.

i see you are looking at pfife's tl's!  awesome mics...throw them with a ua5 and jb3 and you're off to a fine start
yeah he PMed me, but i told him, im still saving money and everything, and he probably shouldnt rely on me paying up.  Are those mics pretty good?

check this thread:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=44280.15

user here selling a self modded ua5 and he's got samples of stuff recorded with TL's.  no better way to see if you like something than listening.  and that's a great price for a pre/adc
he doesnt want PM's unless you are serious, and im still saving up my money, im only 17 so i have some saving to do

Any more suggestions for ADC's?

Those are fine mics for a starting set of gear.

Mic Power- Walmoart Li-on Bat, Gain-Sp-spsb-1, storage-Nomad Jukebox 3. Id spend 100-300 on the ADC

The Walmart LiIon battery is a power source, but not the delivery mechanism for distributing power to the mics.  The SP-SB-1 will act as the delivery mechanism for power to the mics, BUT:  it can't be powered by the LiIon battery, delivers plug-in power to mics via a 3.5mm stereo connector, nad the mics require phantom power via XLR connectors.  So...all this to say skip the SP-SB-1, and maybe the Walmart LiIon battery depending on the power requirements for the pre/ADC you select.

The JB3, though discontinued, is a solid recording device.  I'd stick with it for the moment.

With the mics you listed, plenty of budget for most of the following combos:

Mic Power          | Gain               | ADC
=============================================================
Edirol UA5         | Edirol UA5         | Edirol UA5
Denecke PS-2       | Denecke AD-20      | Denecke AD-20
Denecke PS-2       | line transformers  | Graham Patten ADC-20
Denecke DMIC-20    | Denecke DMIC-20    | Denecke DMIC-20
Sound Devices MP-2 | Sound Devices MP-2 | JB3
Sound Devices MP-2 | Sound Devices MP-2 | SBM-1
Sound Devices MP-2 | Sound Devices MP-2 | Sony D100 or M1 (replaces JB3)
Sound Devices MP-2 | Sound Devices MP-2 | modSBM-1 (a bit over your $1k budget)

Okay one more question....so for example...the Edirol UA5 can be used for mic power, gain, and ADC?

That's correct.  Make sure you read the UA5 FAQ in the Knowledge Base | Archive | Pre/ADC/Processor forum!

Okay...so the UA5 has a ton of features to it and it obviously saves money, but do people sell them a lot, because it says they are discontinued...correct?

Tapers here use the OADE Brothers Digimod ones a lot,*the digimod basically allows you to use it as a stand alone device, no pc necessary. The OADES quit selling them but if you have an oade one they will still mod it. There are 4 mods, the warm, transparent and presence, and a plus mod. They all color the sound a little different. the oade ones are becoming more sought after here cuz they arent sold anymore and they are great machines.

depends. if you are going to be using it with a lappie, you dont need an oade one. There are folks here who digmod(to allow stand alone use) but they dont mod them with the presence warm or transparent mods. the digiimod itself is pretty easy.
There is one for sale in the yard sale section i believe. people love them, so i doubt youll see too many comin through for sale that are oades.

if you want buy one and im sure someone will digimod it for you .

there is also a DIY method that is pretty easy. i think its in the archive section/?right skalinder?
