Title: OKM Recording Setting
Post by: MJ on June 26, 2005, 08:16:40 AM
Hi folks I did a lot of search but still I really really need help here.

I would try to record the up-coming tour of Jeff Beck
with OKM-II rock>A3>TCD-D100 (Line-in Recoding on Sony DAT Recorder).

As I read the postings about A3’s settings here, I decided that I would set A3 as follows:

1) Low Frequency Roll Off / The switch position “-“(linear) is chosen.
(300Hz attenuation is way too much.)

2) Linear Attenuation
The switch position "0" is chosen because I would record it line-in on DAT.

I tested this setting on my sound system and realized that setting the recording level
above “5” would start running into the distortion problem or peak over.
So I am thinking that I should try to record “4” but I am not so sure ???.

If you recorded Jeff’s show or anybody else’s show of heavy guitar with
driving bass setting with OKM before, please let me know your opinion about my
setting described above.

I was asked to record the show by this good friend of mine who gave us
tickets for free.  I don't want to let him down :-*.

Any suggestion and opinion would be highly appreciated ;D.

i dont' have my okms with me right now, but i normally had the attenuation set at the higher value of the 2.  (either 0db or 20db  i can't remember if the 20db on the a3 was - or +.)  if i didn't set the higher of the 2, i'd get some mean distortion.  with the higher of the 2 att settings you also get fairly low levels, at 10 on the dat, you don't even come close to clipping.  roll off looks right.

I would also use the A3 with the following settings :
bass -> no roll off (i.e. linear)
attenuation -> -20dB

I always use the 20db attenuation on my DAT. I'd only use the -20db pad on the A3 if you are standing really close to the stage or stacks. Bassroll off set to zero. My 2 cents...
