ad500 sounds DAMN good behind a nice preamp. i ran one at the sts9 show and was quite surprised by the cheese griller.

yup yup..that machine was built when Dan lavry and bruce jackson worked for apogee.classic stufff.

does this thing have sudden death problems like the AD1000?
-

i would hardly consider the 500 to be a cheese griller, but I'm glad you liked it. The 500 barely gets warm. Now my ad1000 gets pipin' hot, but that's par for the course. Run side by side, you wouldn't ever call the 500 warm to the touch if you touched my ad1000 first. 8)

My 500 gets so f-ing hot I can't even touch it after a long show- it needs cool down time before going in the bag. And I agree the ad 500 is one of the better sounding ad's out there. Its that 18bits- no dither- which is what i think sounds bad in other lesser quality ad's. It seems like everything is 24bit ad's- even low grade 30$ wall mart special cd players, sound cards, dvd players, yet everything is dithered down- just keep it at 16. Just my 2 cents.

wooden box with vents solves the problem of heating. my ad500 is relatively cool to the touch, when compared to the ad1000.

heath;
i recently ran the ad500 for about 2.5hrs inside the back pouch of a rackgear bag and when i took it out, it was really hot. too hot to keep my palm on it beyond 5 seconds. i realize the ventilation was poor and i was powering it with 14volts power supply.

weird. the 500's that i've encountered have all been MUCH cooler to the touch than my ad1k. my bad....
-
Mine gets hot, but not so hot I can't touch it. Maybe my grilling element is broken?
-
Seriously what's the difference between the AD500 & the AD500e? Maybe the 500e doesn't get as hot?
-
500e is 18bits, the 500 is only 16 there might be other differences
