Title: Can someone help me with a buddys resampling problem?
Post by: Ray76 on July 01, 2005, 02:08:52 PM
This is from a friend below, want to see if yall could help out. Buncha geniouses here, and it helps me learn too. THanks!Ray

So, I downloaded (bittorrent) the Gillian Welch - Telluride show off DaD.
The uploaded didn't make it clear that it was  24 bit audio
version (there has subsequently been a 16 bit seeded, but...).

Figuring I'd give it a shot, I installed Audacity to resample from 24 to 16
bit.

The files are in FLAC format, so it appears that one needs to convert from
FLAC to wav before uploading to Audacity correct? If I uploaded the FLAC
files, it converts to mp3 and I couldn't find a setting to change that.

So, I've converted to wav and uploaded. Each track has it's own "window"
w/in the larger application window. I click on the drill down menu that's to
the left of each track and set the sample format to 16 bit (default is
32-bit float),
and the rate to 48000hz. Two questions here:

- I've always assumed that 44000hz is the standard, but when I converted at
that rate, the speed of each track was way slow.

- Is there a way to set each track at the settings I want all at once
instead of
having to do them one at a time?

So, after all of that, it didn't seem to work as the files I "resampled" are
still at 24 bit. Feurio recognizes them and usually converts (both from
48000 to 44100 and from 24 to 16 bit) however, I'm getting an error when
I try to burn:

Error when reading source file:  Undefined error: -80

ErrCode:  17/-65/1/01/00

Again, my feeble brain is stumped. Can anyone lend a hand?

I think the settings he needs to use are in the Preferences of Audacity. There are settings for file formats for exporting, which is where you set the bit rate. and there is also a setting in there for the project sample rate. The little drop down sample rate on the individual track isn't going to resample the way he wants it to. It will just make it sound slow.  I'm not sure if there is a way to set up a batch process for this in Audacity. Honestly, I think he would have a much easier time just getting the 16 bit file set.

he needs to DITHER then RESAMPLE, he isnt dithering the files to 16-bit

also, ive heard of weird stuff happening when trying to dither individual files

its ALWAYS better to dither/resample the WHOLE set first, THEN track out and burn

you can dither then resample individual tracks. It's how I do it in wavelab with the batch process function. Having not read the entire thread, I suggest that your friend delete the 24 bit files and download the 16 bit. it would really be the easiest way.

just for reference, when going from 24/48 or 24/96 down to 16/44.1, it's always best to resample first, then add dither to convert to 16-bit second.  when you resample, you want to work with as much info as possible.  converting down to 16 bit should always be the last step of post-processing.

good point jason, forgot which was the correct order to process!
