Title: On/above stage placement questions
Post by: it-goes-to-eleven on July 12, 2005, 11:21:10 AM
My last show was at a local venue, the blind pig.  I ended up running a boom to get DFC in front of the board with my 4061's on a baffle.  See the rig pics here:  http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=45413.0

There is a ceiling pipe that runs from the stage to behind the board.. It is only about 2' off of dfc (you can see the pipe in the first two pics).  I am thinking of clamping the disc (on a short boom) to the pipe.   At the last show, there was some unexpected throwing of the drum kit and I'm glad I didn't have any gear on stage.

So..  I could clamp anywhere from directly above the stage to out over the floor (for an equilateral triangle between the hanging PA). I know that stage recording can be hit or miss depending on the monitor setup.. Ending up with nearly no vocals or too much percussion is a risk and a worry..  There will be plenty of other tapes of this show but that won't always be the case.

Any of you guys tried clamping above the band at a rock type show?

at the club i tape at regularly they used to use a pair of Crown PZM microphones on a baffle above the stage for a matrix feed to their CD recorder.

One time, i plugged into the soundboard but only the over-the-stage micrphones were being fed to my recorder. i was actually quite surprised how decent it sounded.  Drums were slightly heavy in the mix(especialy the cymbols) but the vocals could be discerned and the overall mix wasn't bad.

good luck!

Here you can see the PZM's in action.  Looks like an inverted pyramid:

i saw Ginger Baker play back in the late 80's.
He was drunk as could be, and was at risk of having to cancel the show. He came out fom backstage, and sat at his kit (huge). He then stood up to greet/wave at the audience, and proceeded to fall forward, taking his whole kit with him. The whole kit came crashing down from the drum riser, and wiped out the area in front of it. The mics were totally tangled with the kit, the guitars/amp below etc. So they had to breakdown the stage, and reset it. At which point Ginger came back out, and almost did the same damn thing again. Then actually proceeded to sit down and pull off the show.
His little drunken stage dive set the show back an hour or so.
(all caught on tape of course).

Earache My Eye - Alice Bowie

My momma talkin' to me tryin' to tell me how to live
But I don't listen to her 'cause my head is like a sieve
My daddy, he disowned me 'cause I wear my sister's clothes
He caught me in the bathroom with a pair of pantyhose

My basketball coach, he done kicked me off the team
For wearin' high-heel sneakers and actin' like a queen

The world's comin' to an end, I don't even care
As long as I can have a limo and my orange hair
And it don't bother me if people think I'm "funny"
'Cause I'm a big rock star and I'm makin' lots of money
money, money, money, money, money, money
Ahhh! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha...

I'm so bloody rich! Ha ha ha ha
I own apartment buildings and shopping centers! Ha ha ha ha
And I only know three chords! Ha ha ha ha

i have recorded at a local bar with mics on stage above the band, slightly in front of the band but behind the PA speakers. i got the vocals from the PA. it sounds great. i have it posted on digitalpanic if you would like to check it out.  whenever i can run like this i will!

there is one cymbal that is kind of loud, but overall i like it. i am going to try to get a little bit further back next time to decrease that cymbal. i hope! there was a drum kit and another guy on various percussion and dead center between the mics was in between the two drummers. being able to get the vocals from the sbd makes it work great.
