my friend just ordered the new akg 414 XL2's does anyone know what the difference between those and the AKG 414XLS

XL2's are engineered primarily for vocals.  XLS's are engineered for a wide range of applications (ie instruments, vocals, studio recording, etc).  Check out www.akgusa.com

IMO yes john, theyre VERY bright cause theyre made for vocals mainly

what pre/ad is he using?

Hey John its John K......
Well it depends...I would say...for up close they may tend to be bright and this is typically where you run LD's, however the rise in treble wil counter act any proximity affect you run in any mode except omni.  They will sound great further back in the audience where the treble tends to drop off a bit.........i may have to agree with Bean the XLS may be more versatile.
