Hey, been fretting about this one....it is the ol' 'if ain't broke, then don't fix it'. I have never done it but I am leaving Fuji Rock in a weeks time, planning to record 4-6 hours a day for three days. I have done at least 30 on it with no glitches but never had more than 60% full at anyone time (delete old files after transfers and backups are made). Just wanna know what everyones experiences are (good and bad) relating to formatting of these things. THANX, ANDY

ive done it a million times, id do it, just amke sure you do it and a disc cleanup and do both and test them out, make sure you have all of the drivers+firmware you want to do also, cause sometimes when i format my jb3, it has a firmware problem, no biggie tho, bust out the usb cable(cause mine doesnt reload the OS w/ the 1394...anyway) and 'upgrade firmware' from the comp, turn off/on a few times to see if it gives you that error, and youre golden
sounds harsher than it is

I do it all the time, remember to redo your settings, mainly line-in --> optical in in the record menu.

I've formatted exactly once on my primary JB3.
-
I run the defrag every month or so, but I've only done a format once to fix a firmware glitch.

and make sure you auto off is 'off'

I format it before runs, festivals, etc.
Warning: After formatting, do not select "Reboot," just power it off. Rebooting followed by powering off will result in corrupt firmware and a "firmware problem" message. Firmware must then be reloaded from a computer.

i don't think i've ever done it. run it for like 50 shows or so.

and I've always rebooted afterward and only ever had the firmware problem once. I think I will try to the shut down and restart method from now on though.

I run a disc cleanup after 3 or 4 shows. My firmware has been running great, so no need to do a format. Disc cleanup is key, though.

disc cleanup takes away my personal settings tho, thats why i like formatting better, plus, when you format, there are no bits and pieces floating around to cause defragmentation
just my 000.00000002 cents tho
