I searched bestbuy and a couple others online and came up empty handed.
I saw the ones at sonic sense but shudder to think what I'd kick out for a
fat tascam or hhb :P
I have a dual well sony rds(?) 300 that has served me well for many years but
it appears the burner side of it is crapping out and even thought I plan on
getting a 2496 card or something for transfers to the comp I stll would like to
have a stand alone in the other end of the house w/my other stuff.

duplicator or a burner?
I didnt like the tascam CDRW750 when I had to borrow one while my CDRW700 was getting repaired it had some stupid ass features that ruinned the discs and were unacceptable. I recomend the CDRW700. Tascam put out that DVwhatever recorder recently Mooke has one and put some pix of it up too.
Find a used HHB or Tascam?

burner. my sony has one tray that is just a player, the 2nd tray plays/burns
so you can do tray to tray and has rca and optical in's/out's nothing fancy
but not basic either so I'm looking for something similar or upgrade a little.

I have a Fostex CR200 stand alone and it is a great unit. It is exactly the same as the HHB CDR-800 and the Otari CDR18.. These units are discontinued but they pop up on ebay every now and then. There is also a Fostex CR300 and an HHB CDR-830 (I think) that are the same and they are also very nice.. I would go for the CR200, CDR-800 or CDR18 becasue they have a beautiful transport and sound great.

my tascam 700 cdr has been great.
my tascam dvra1000 has been less than great.
my marantz cdr500 dual well burner has been a p.o.s.
the hhb 850 is a stud of a burner
the hhb 830 burn-it doesn't have the same build or reputation as the 850
there is a lesser tascam burner in the 400 series(??) that is pretty much meant as a bare bones compliment to the tas700.
i agree with the cdrw700, a champion. had a couple power related issues with mine that prodig was able to handle. the issues were mine due to taking the thing in the field all the time, packing/unpacking, etc. the cord had gotten ganked up at the chassis.
don't know if it's still made anymore, and if it's the one mike's referring to, but tascam made(makes?) the cdrw4u. seemed to me to be the little brother of the 700. same feature set crammed into a smaller silver box. saw a guy using one at suwannee a year ago.

be aware that at least with the hhb 830, you will at some point have issues with any media over 24x. There is an advisory at the hhb service site. I was getting dropouts and unreadable discs at 52x. Went to 12x and no problems. However there is definitely more expense with the low speed media.

I think that cdrw4u had a pretty good reputation

I have both a Tascam cdrw700 and HHB 850. The Tascam was sent back while under warranty but has been great ever since. What can I say about the HHb? This thing is rock solid and has never given me any trouble. The only downside to the HHb is the long finalizing time. That being said, I seem to never use either of them since the computer is so much faster.

Same here. Mine has never given me a single problem. It's also a good sounding playback deck. I have one for sale if you are interested.
