Post by: mrdave on July 20, 2005, 04:08:58 PM
Thinking about purchasinig a pda/ipax to record shows.
Was wondering what brand/model unit was good.
How reliable are PDA's to tape with?

you should subscribe to the "pencomputingaudio" yahoo group and read up.

I was one of the first adopters of the PDAudio-CF>iPaq system.  It took nearly 2 years for it to work at 24bit, but I'm having great success with it now.  I know others with the same exact components that had problems, so its hard to recommend as "reliable".  I run PDAudio-CF> iPaq 3835 (with HP dual pc card expansion pack)> Addonics Pocket ExDrive (with an IBM/Travelstar 7200rpm 40GB drive) and have to pre-allocate files to record at 24/96.

Very reliable/stealthable for 16 bit recording; no-so-reliable for 24 bit.  I have no problems taping 24/96 with the same HD setup that Craig T runs.  Don't know why other folks are having problems.  Also, lots of gear to deal with (PDA, expansion pack, PDAudio-CF card, storage media).

I run a Ipaq 5555 with the HP dual pack using the addonics pocket ex drive with a 20 drive for festivals.  For bar shows I run the same only I use a 4 gig microdrive that is clustered at 64bytes.  Never had a problem.   If you have any question just PM me.
