+ .... i'll try that out!

also....i'm on a mac using xACT. i can't find a way to use that option with this particular program. i'm going to download all the other mac software for FLAC now.

By the way, I didn't specify, but I don't think this can be done in the frontend. You might have to revert to the command line encoder. MikeW, if you read this, can you automatically revert to --lax if the samplerate of the input files is non-standard?
In OSX, give Scott Brown a holler. I bet he can build that into xACT without too much trouble.

Yes, definately send Scott Brown an e-mail, he is a nice guy and very willing to help inprove his stuff.
Also good for you for using the 88.2kHz setting. In my opinion this gives almost all of the gains of 96kHz, but alows for a pristine sample rate conversion to 44.1 kHz, since all those values are already present.

in the meantime you could open a terminal window, navigate to the folder where the .wavs are and use the following command:
% flac -# --lax *.wav
where # is the level of compression (0-8)

the other mac software won't do it. xACT doesn't do it at the moment either. i meant to put the lax option in a while ago but simply forgot.
i suppose i could whip up a quick fix after work today that'd allow you to do it from xACT
