Title: Are AK50s good outdoors?
Post by: Rob D. on July 27, 2005, 04:49:17 PM
I'm about to run my KM100s for the first time outdoors (Bruce Horsby @the Zoo)  tonight and was wandering if I should go with the AK40s or 50s? From what I remember, the TS is in front of the soundboard DFC so its not too far from the stage.

I'm not that familier with the neumann hypers (though I have run the 150's a couple of times). However, in general the reasons one would tend to run hypers apply less outdoors than in. Lack of walls and ability to fly high tend to favor cards. However, if you are far away or if the bass is overpowering you may want to run the hypers.

If it's close to the stage I'd say 40's.

I say run the 40's, especially since it is an outdoor show.

FWIW I am not a fan of the 50's at all due to how bright they sound to my ears.

Another vote for the AK40s.    If you are really sweet-spot close and have access to the AK43s, you should try those.

outdoors with no roof run the least directional cap you have imho

under a roof from up close, I'd use 43's or 40's

farther back and under a rooof I'd lean towards the 50's

I've been listening to some of my 50 tapes and with the right gear I think they're pretty nice... with a V3, they're bright. I wouldn't run them with an m248 but with an m148, psp2, minime they sound pretty decent.

So what y'all are saying is that you're big fans of the AK50s  ;D

+T to all, thanks for the input - much appreciated! I'll just need to wait another day before using those AK50s  >:(

I'm off now - wish me luck!

nice sounding caps but too bright for many people's tastes.

I like them, but since I switched to a tube amp and added a colored DAC I've started to really enjoy the SD neumann's more than ever... SD neumann's have a brightness and bite to the high end that I found fatiguing on solid state gear. The ak50's have this same bite and they also have a pretty severely rolled off lowend, I can see where most folks find them bright.
