Title: Suggestions Please: Ready to upgrade to new mics
Post by: HighVoltage on July 31, 2005, 02:05:43 PM
I got a pair of SP-CMC-2s.... im gonna hold on to these to use as Stealth mics for when taping isn't allowed.

But now that I've been workin all summer, i got some extra cash to drop a new set up.

Im still fairly new to this, so ill list what im looking for and if you guys can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

- Im looking for crisp, clear sound that will not pick up much crowd chatter (so i guess cardiods?  whats the dif between cardiods and hypercardiods?)

- I'll be using my iRiver IHP-140 for recording.

- Price range.... lets say around 550 total for the whole set up.

- I now run TheRootsLive.com, so if you are wondering what type of music this is for, mostly The Roots...

I've been looking at AKG C 1000s, and some Schoeps... but not really sure which model is the best for the Schoeps.

Would I also need a pre or phantom power?

I'm looking to buy now so I can test them out... will be needing them for sure by 9/16 for that next show.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

i would look into audix 1290s just my $0.02

for allmost all of the mics tapers use you will need phantom power and a pre is reall nice to have as well

deneke ps2   $100-$150 depending on where you shop, and whether you buy used or new.

I just picked up an ART phantom II off ebay for 36.99 and I think it might even be better than the ps 2 (I know I'll catch hell for saying that around here!)  but less than half the price and uses two 9v batts instead of one.   It will run twice as long without new batts!  power is power.  48v each with their own 9v for under $50.00...

Im about to pull the trigger on this....

http://www.musiciansbuy.com/audix_m1290_micro_with_free_m1290kit.html

and for the power supply...

I need something like this with a mini-plug output that will fit into my i river

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=DEN-PS2-MINI&type=store&template=specifications

but 250 is waaay too much for something like that... does anyone know where i can find one for cheaper with a mini plug output to work with my set up?  or even better.. is there a converter i can use?

I appreciate all the help.

don't forget you can make / buy adapters to go from xlr to your stereo mini.  the $50.00 ART box still wins in my mind.

What sanjay said...I was also able to score a UA-5 off of ebay for $99 ;D; now I have an excellent sounding A/D (Busman2 mod) for less than a new UA-5

i would not buy that. just have some one (or do it your self) make a adapter for it

you could try and find a ua-5 on ebay for cheap. you would have one hell of a good rig

and fyi the audix m1290 will kill your batterys really fast, so if you go with the ps2 you are going to want to make a battery pack for the ps2

hmm, so my budget wasn't as big as I originally thought it was.... ended up settling on a pair of AKG c1000s.

I want to know what else I should get with these for the best performance.... are they worth getting phantom powered?

honestly when I ran these I could not tell the difference.  However I think if you get a UA-5 the sound will improve with the A/d and preamp and you'll save money in 9v batteries.

I've been looking at the AD-20... which one is the better route to take?

Note that it will be feeding into an iRiver ihp-140

I would say UA-5

Reasons: Has both Phantom Power, A/D Converter, Preamp, and 4 inputs for a matrix.  And can be cheaper than a ua-5.

The AD-20 has only a preamp and an a/d and you cannot do a matrix with.

When you are ready to upgrade past the c1000's you'll be happy to ahve a ua-5 with the phantom power there.

well, the modded ua5s are more expensive. the ad20s are more expensive than the STOCK ua5.

if you got stock a ua-5 on ebay and did the digimod your self it would be cheaper. if you got one from some one here who had a it moded(t or p or whatever the others are) it would be much more

if you did get one off ebay and want to upgrade it, some one on here is now doing mods (forgot hes name)

Edit: to make some things more clear

used AKG391's into mmmatt's Sound Devices USB preamp now for sale for a couple of bucks in the Yard Sale here into your lappy; you would make crispy recordings trust me (the AKG 393's would more accurately provide the sound you want but they never are for sale used, but you can buy the 93 caps separately and later), and you could get all this for probably 600 or 700 total
