Title: ISO recommendations for low-pro shock mounts for 480's
Post by: tim in jersey on August 05, 2005, 12:45:49 PM
I know about the Superlux HM-32's, but apparently they aren't all that sturdy. What about the Shure A53M's will they fit?

What is the diameter on the 480's anyhow? I know they are bigger than my Schemps.

I've read a few comments about AKGs with the Shure mounts. Apparently they fit, but it's extremely tight. I know a couple of tapers who left them in the mount, transported them that way - since it was a PITA taking them in and out.

I have used the superlux at about 10 shows so far and have had no issues.  they are much more low pro than the AT's I was using.  at the price you can order two sets if you are worried about them breaking.

I trashed an HM-32 recently and ordered replacements this week.  At $6 each I consider them affordable enough to be "disposable".

While I was on their site (bottom of the page) (http://www.superlux.us/smalldiaphragm.html) I noticed the HM-30 which they describe as not providing the same level of isolation as the 32's but that they were more durable and even more low-profile.  I don't believe I've ever heard anyone's real-world experience with them though.

Good luck!

Well, I guess I'll be the guinea pig and test the HM-30's. I'll be ordering a set of the 32's as well.

check out the A61 swivel adapters. you can put the cap up and the body below it vertically right next to your stand making it ultra low-pro... at least for the 480's. it's as good as you can do without active cables -- which, of course, don't exist. a few people around here run them that way and the pics look great!

I've thought about the A61's, just don't feel like dishing out the cash at the moment...

i am looking into these for akg 391

does anyone know if they will fit/work?

i don't have a lot of money and also figured for $6 i would risk it and give them a try
i did hear the bands break somewhat easy so i will prob get some extra bands

this site shows pics of them

i don't see how the 30 does anything for you as far as shock goes, looks like it just holds the mic

The HM32 works well with the 390 or 480 and comes with 4 extra bands.

I use these to hold some Peluso's and really like them so far.  I think 480's would work in these too, but maybe someone here who's run both can say for sure.  $20/each and come w/ an extra set of elastic bands.  http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp?SKU=JJM27SMXX

Both the Peluso and Joe Meek microphone are 22mm so they fit the mount well. The AKG is only 21m and might be a little loose, but I've never tried it.

the HM-30's don't fit the AKG's very well. The mounts are too small. I'd imagine one could force them into place and leave them on the mic, but you wouldn't want to be using these if you plan on removing the mics each and every time in the field.

The nice thing about them though, is they fit the Schoeps like a glove, I tried the mic bodies and the ORTF and Kwon bars. Great low-cost alternative to the A20(s) except you don't get the little swing arm thingy that secures the active cables which is no big deal, IMO.
