Title: figure 8 mic for mid side stereo
Post by: BLOODYJACK on August 05, 2005, 03:26:12 PM
Anyone out there using seperate mics to do mid side stereo recordings if so what mics?
I want to try this but cannot find any Bi-directional (figure 8) mics

I ran it a couple weeks ago with an ADK TL in figure 8 and a Studio Projects C4 as the mid.

I may be reading into things, which is more than possible as I've hoisted quite a few brews tonight,  but I think maybe bloodyjack might mean running mics by two different mic manufacturers. IE: fig8 by neumann alongside a card by schoeps or vice versa.

If so, that's a really interesting proposition. How would MS w/ various different mic combos sound? Hmmm...

I can not afford the expense to try it but this looks like a great mic to add to any cardoid to record mid/side AKG Blue Line SE300B Power Module and CK94 Bi-directional Capsule,
but 2 AKG bodies 2 cardio capsule,s for xy and a CK94 capsule for m/s looks like a great setup for about $1500

I've run m/s with an ak40 and a ck94 several times. It's a great blend of the Neumann's smooth detail, and the AKG's bottom end punch. Sounds great onstage!

I have ran the schoeps mk4v with the mk8, decoded throught the v3 or vms5u...the 4v brightens the overall sound of the mk8, also ran 2 mk8's for panic in philadelphia, with good success...

Really good figure 8-s are a bit difficult to find in the lower priced segments. Most of the switchable LDC-s are useable but does not have that really perfect figure 8. Plenty good for testing MS though.

My favourite is the Sennheiser MKH-30. Use that together with an MKH-40 or MKH-50 and you have the same mics used on just about any film location.

Schoeps has a good figure 8, Neumann makes a small one as well.

Other really good figure-8s can be found among the ribbon mics. Very delicate animals though, not made for stealthing, and takes quite a bit of gain in the preamp, generally more than moste preamps allows.
