Title: Just bought an LSD2 Stereo Mic
Post by: Sanjay on August 09, 2005, 02:35:27 PM
How do you guys like to run it best?  I'm very excited!

congrats -- great mic.  first off, have never used the high cut filters or the attenuator/pads -- never had the need.

We've run x/y cards at 90 degrees and mid/side (one mic set to card pattern facing forward, the other to figure 8, facing side to side and the resulting recording mixed down/decoded post-recording) with great success.   Mid side is really nice in that you can dial in the best configuration, etc. in a controlled environment after the show.  Still want to run blumlein (crossed figure 8s at 90 degrees), just need to get out more :)

Haven't yet run the omnis for field use. Did, however, have a faint hum when set to omni mode.  Dan at soundpure walked us through a quick and easy fix to this problem.

Enjoy!

Urge to try something completely opposite and new as well as a fair price.

I'll fly it at the Lew-au if you'll be there.  Or stephen kellogg

Welcome to the team. I think that makes 4 of us now.

I've had great results with mine both cards xy and blumlein. I've only run MS once, since decoding took me too much time.

I have not used the omni setting or the pad and roll-off. The roll off is too steep, and the mic is not very sensitive, so paired with the ua-5 I've never needed attenuation.

Enjoy the new toy.

Oh, and if you want to dump the crappy stock cable, I already put Marc through the bs of figuring out the wiring.

I run one as well, bought mine based on positive reviews and Darrin's suggestion. I couldn't be happier with this mic, it performs well above it's price would suggest. I've only run it xy cards, but it sounds so good I haven't felt the need to try anything else. I'll most likely run it blumlein for Panic in Aspen later this month. I don't want to hate on the AKGs, but I think this mic is hands down in another league compared to the 393s.

anyone got a better price than $800 seems steep when you compare it to there single studio condensers. one can be had for $150 bucks so why is the dual more than say $350 -400

Link me to a place where you can find a c3 for $150 I don't even think one can be found on ebay.  You may be thinking of the c1.

The cheapest Ive seen the C3 for is 270$ from soundpure.com thats the advertised price they may cut a better deal if you call them.

You guys are right I just checked there web site the salesman at the weekend was trying to sell me a b3 for 150.
Even so if there 300 why is the dual 800, supply and demand I suppose

One step further, I find it interesting that the LSD2 has a frequency response of 30~20000Hz and the C3's are 40~20000Hz.  That may be one reasone why the LSD2 is more expensive?  Interesting since LSD2 is essentially two C3's.

So you lose some low end with the C3's, but you gain the ability to run split omni/card (s).   Seems like a decent trade for a $200-250 savings

If only these babies had hypers!

If only these babies had hypers!

cards are actually very tight.  I compared the ADK A51TL's and LSD2 - both in card x/y - and the LSD2 definitely had a tighter pickup pattern.  I don't miss the hypers at all since going with the LSD2.  The bigger question is in situations that you'd use hypers - ie. from a distance or in a highly reflective room - would you like the x/y config.  x/y from any kind of distance tends to have a mono-ish sound (although the crowd fills out the stereo image), even if you use hypers.

So how would you recommend to run the lsd2 from longer distances, even though normally i will use my akgs I may end up getting rid of them for just this.

I had really good luck running mid/side from a distance -- post-show you can dial in the amount of side (ambiance) you want to have accentuate the direct pickup sound of the forward facing card.

only if you like x/y - which I do.  on my playback system, it gives the best holographic 3D image.

From farther back, I'd open up the angle.

I'll probably run at 110* at vibes this weekend.
