so I am trying to determine the best way to manage what I record at ACL, given I will not have a computer avail to dump stuff onto. I can buy a maxtor one thouch HD which appears to be as simple as pressing a button and it replicates the HD...costly for a one time fix (based on how often I do festivals).
The other option, and thus me looking for input, is I can record some acts at 24/96 and some at 24/48 or even 16/44.1. The question is has anyone tried this and has it caused any issues?
Appreciate any input...as it stands, I am leaning towards just recording everything at 24/48, but want to make sure I think through my options...

do you think there is a used market for that maxtor box? if so, the difference b/w new price and selling it off may make it worthwhile even just for 1 weekend...

Hopefully this will be solved w/ v2 of the firware so you can off load to DVD or other external media
only current option is upgrade to 100GB internal ~50hrs @ 24/96 or swap drives on saturday

Dam... Well I think I'm still going to run 24/48 since home computer HD isn't much bigger then my 722 HD ;D

Nick, just get a big ass hard drive and be done with it.
Any external device to extract and store the recordings is just another thing to carry around and it's bound to be more fragile than the 722. Put a 80G-100G drive in there and that should get you though 3 thirteen hour days, which is really a lot considering that you won't run in between bands.

good plan. you can keep the stock drive and swap it out if you get close :)

I'm using an 80G Fujitsu 4200rpm drive. Someone else (scott brown maybe) swapped his and is using a different drive. I originally thought there were some issues with the drive and heat but everything has been traced back to firmware, so I would say that this has been a good performing drive. It was rated well in the reviews at the time I bought it.
I didn't research the power consumption as closely as I should have because I thought that I would be running external SLA batteries. I simply selected a 4200rpm drive and low price. If I were buying today, I would pay more attention to the power consumption specs and I would look into information about heat tolerance. Although I've had not issues with heat and my run time with the 6000mAh NiMH batteries is in line with everyone elses reported results.

Yea I'm on the latest firware and ran one of my tests in direct sunlight on my back porch w/ the heat @ ~106F(probably hotter since there is NO airflow on my back porch). This was with a knock-off NP-F960 and w/ my custom pack. The unit was HOT but kept on going.

Has anybody tried using an external HD for field storage from a SD722? I would have thought you would need some sort of OS to save it.

the maxtor onetouch II looks like it is an ideal unit for dumping stuff off without a PC...push a button and the hard drive replicates what is on the 722 through the firewire interface...but the online reviews from users are very poor...so I wont be going that route....looks like a laptop is still needed around...

i put a hitachi 5k100 80 gig in mine. it's 5400 but power consumption is around the same as a 4200. no problems so far
