Which is better? I just got the Zappa Halloween 1978 disk and it has both DTS and DVD-A. I can play either on my system. Both are 24/96 in 5.1 surround. Is one supposed to be better than the other?

I'm quite sure that DTS is a higher resolution format, not sure on the particular details but almost any movie that you rent that has it will sound better in DTS in my experience. Thought that I read somewhere that DVD-A is 24/48 and DTS is 24/96 but I could easily be wrong about that. Regardless, best to have a listen to both and see what you think as quite often the differences are very subtle and will differ from system to system.

yes, this is accurate. DTS is a compression algorithm like dolby digital. It is less lossy than dolby digital, but lossy nonetheless. DVD-A is a means of delivering uncompressed PCM audio data up to 24/192 in stereo or 24/96 in surround. so if your player supports dvd-a, definitely use that over DTS.
