Title: R4 SBD/AUD Matrix Synch Issues?
Post by: Nick Graham on August 24, 2005, 12:46:06 PM
Not sure if anyone's done this with the R4 yet, though I'd imagine this question could be asked about any 4 channel recorder...

Anyhow, if you're running 2 channels AUD and 2 channels board (creating 2 different WAV files - not a 4 channel BWF), would there be any synching issues with the 2 sources in post? I'd assume not being both were done with the same word clock, but want to doublecheck.

I'll be doing this next weekend, and just curious what problems might arise. Any help from R4, 744, Deva , or Nagra users appreciated....

As long as both are analog feeds into the R4 then they should be synched. I think when one feed is a digital source and the other is analog then there will be drift, since two different word clocks are being used.

I will be doing a related experiment soon - using 2 A/D converters -using the same word clock- and 2 JB3s - I'm wondering if there will be any sync issues...not sure if the JB3 has a clock that will affect the sync...?

It'll be fine - you'll just have to 'slide' the board track forward in post (~1ms per foot from the p.a. but adjust it by ear of course).

hey nick, give sleepypedro a pm, he runs mk4v's into a R4 and I know he does soundboard too.  He sent me a tape with a mix and it's f'n sweet  ;D

hi nick, hi again jason

i did indeed do a 4 channel sbd/aud matrix with the r4.  when i took both wav files into sonic foundry vegas, i did find they were out of synch by a millisecond or two, but this could be a case of room delay more than an issue with the r4.  hope this helps?

adjusting the sync discrepancy took all of two minutes, as opposed to the countless hours i've spent trying to sync two sources captured on devices using different clocks.  yuk.

so in other words, yes both sets of stereo pairs are synched to the same wordclock as far as i can tell.

(ask me about my cecil taylor experience sometime synching three sources captured by three separate d8s.  that one project is the reason i stopped doing matrixes for five years until the r4 landed in my lap!)

1/75 of a second per foot is the delay for sound at see level. If your mics aren't on stage then you would have to "align" the two source. They wouldn't necessarily drift though. Once you figure the shift you should be good to go.

oops...340 m/s = 1115 feet/s
