Title: NJB3 question - doesn't appear in the faq
Post by: yanosh on August 27, 2005, 06:44:47 PM
Alright.
Maybe it was asked before but I didn't find anything about it.

The question is simple:
When buying used NJB3, what should I check about the player to make sure it's working properly.

I'm kinda afraid to buy used equipment but since it's now the only way to get NJB3 and I'm intending to buy one,
then I'd like to know how to make sure the player doesn't have any hidden deffects, and that the seller is not tricking me.

Don't fear used equipment.  I posted what I think is a good tip on buying used gear, check it out (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=12650.msg349513#msg349513).  Also, modify the purchase agreement (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=48329.0) I posted to ensure everything's well documented.  If you ask the questions in the previous post, I'd add the questions and the answers to the purchase agreement so *everything* about the sale is in one email / document and agreed to by both parties.

Thanks for the answer.

Maybe I didn't make myself clear enough.
In my case I can actually see the player and check it before I buy.

So I can physically check the player before I buy and I'd like to know what kind of things I should check.

just like youd check any other piece of equipment, but for our use...the optical and line in inputs are very important..id make a short tape with it, or get a patch from your stereo, anything..

Can you explain to me a little about the optical line?

The line in is where I connect the mic and record something.
What's the optical input? Is it a different name for digital input?

common things that can break on a jb3 you could look for:
1.  power button - does it power on?
2. jog dial - does it move smoothly and does the menu respond likewise?
3. is the input jack firmly seated and in good shape?  these can break.
4. does the lcd look okay?

That's a good list of typical JB3 problems.

Also, there have been problems with bad batteries. If you have time, record analog-in with nothing connected to the JB3.  From full charge it should record about 2.5 hours before dying.
