Title: Schoeps Tapers: A Question
Post by: grider on August 28, 2005, 03:44:43 PM
why don't more Schoeps tapers use the Schoeps vms 5u preamp?  it looks very small, and its presumably made to be matched with the Schoeps line of mics, yet I see most Schoeps tapers using other preamps like the V2/V3, or the Sonosax preamp, is there a reason other than the steep price of this preamp that it is not used much?

For me, three factors:

[1] VMS price
[2] by the time I got my Schoeps, I already had a pre/ADC I liked
[3] and I really like my pre/ADC with my Schoeps, so...no need to change

for me it's only one factor:

the v2 sounds better(to my ears) :)

That's right! V2 is much cleaner -  and much more than that!

I would like to try it someday to use with the stereo cable. I find the price for what it was too be a bit high, and you can have my V3 when you pry it from my cold dead hands ;D

I ran a vms 5u for about 2 years. it's actually not that small, it's almost as big as a v2, but lighter in weight. i switched to a sonosax and cmc6xt/kc5's because i liked the sound of the sonosax preamp combined with schoeps mics. a lot more expensive, but i think it sounds a lot better. I also wanted to run split omnis and you cant do that with the kcy cable.

The vms is a good preamp, a little bit thin sounding and not as musical as some of the more popular pres out there, ie: grace, oade, sonosax. I made some awesome tapes with the vms, but i think i couldve made slightly better ones with the sonosax in there. the vms has some nice features though... runs a long time on AA batteries, kcy cable is super small and compact with no bodies to mess with, mid-side option, lightweight, it's made by schoeps and it's bulit like a tank. unfortunately it's a little bit expensive when compared to most preamps, especially now with all-in-one capabilities.

The main reason I switched from the VMS to the lemosax is the fact that the sax has continuous gain while the VMS is stepped.  The size and ergonomics also played a part.  The VMS is a tank and is about the coolest looking pre going that doesn't have blinkenlights, but if you're looking for a schoeps active rig I'd say go with kc-y-> Sax LS/2, cheaper and more convenient.

i really like the vms02ib, older version of the vms5.

here is a picture of it :

so nice and compact, built like a tank, can decode m/s on the fly or not, perfect for stealth (with internal battery option)
