Title: Anybody running AKG 480's> T+mod UA-5?
Post by: Chuck on September 14, 2005, 04:58:32 PM
I'd like to know what that rig sounds like.
I'm thinking it may be time for a change...

Dgodwin runs 460's to a tmodua-5, his tapes are nice for sure!

Yea, I was going to mention the same.  He's got a handful of his show up on the Archive.  KCMoeJoe runs JW mod 460's > T+mod.  He's got a bunch of his shows up the Archive too, and they sound fantastic!

Don't know how to relate that to the 480's though since I've never heard a true comp of the the three mics.

I'm waffling...  :-\

That PMD 660 sounds great, but it's limited to 16 bit max resolution. Plus, no digital inputs, so you can't just use it to record.
The PMD 671 is a bit too expensive for me now. That would be the ideal thing, because it can deal with 24 bit and it does have digital inputs.

Essentially I was captivated by the sound of the modded PMD660, so I'm thinking I might investigate the T+ mod, because it has a similair sound. I dunno... I guess I'm wanting something new and the ideal solution is out of my reach :(

Rodney on the Colorado Crew runs a T+ mod. I may try to convince him to let me run it with my mics sometime.

sorry, I'm not running the 480's, but I've been running a t+ for a while.

If you plan on 24-bit and you record louder rock shows, then I would highly suggest the ua-5. I have found the ua-5 to be fantastic at 24-bit, and ordinary in 16-bit. also, the limitations of the ua-5 being a "discount" box are only shown when you have to crank the gain, IMHO.

And I would offer that the + mod makes the UA5 sound fantastic even at high gain.

I concur, I've owned a straight digimod, a warm mod, and now tmod+ ua-5. I really want to run a warm mod+. The only reason I might get a v3 is for nature/non-music applications. For now the tmod+ is here to stay.

EDIT: sorry for off-topic

I re-evaluated my recent 16-bit and 24-bit recordings, as well as some 24-bit ones I've made lately. the 24's are great and musical, but the 16-bit sounds a lot nicer than I remember.  I don't know why, but upon initial listening the 16 seemed so flat and the 24 was much livelier. Now the difference is not that big.

FYI, these were all PA recorded shows. But tomorrow there is outdoor university lab jazz bands tomorrow, I'm gonna run onstage, maybe some non-PA stuff will turn up some interesting results:

                                                        > usb > laptop (24/48)
sp c4 > segue dogstars > tmod+ ua-5
                                                        > optical > jb3 (truncated 16-bit/48)

I ran 140's > t+ > Powerbook 24/48 onstage awhile back. The 24 bit definitely has a livelier sound than 16. The increase in low level detail was nice too. It's not a night and day difference, but I thought it was definitely noticeable.

It definitely has those limitations, but I'm loving the sound of my JW mod 460's into the ACM mod 660

That's good news.
I have made up my mind that I want the ACM 671.
I just have to wait for Doug to start making them!  ;)
