I have a stealth source from in front of the sb at a small venue. mikes were about a foot above crowd. any suggestions on filtering crowd noise out, or at least reducing it?
-
Not much to do. The crowd noise shares its frequency range with the music, so any attempt to minimize the crowd noise by applying EQ or compression against the crowd noise frequencies will also impact the audio. In other words, fixing the crowd will hose the music.

that's why i asked because that's what i thought. i figured i might get lucky and hear of something i've never run into before for this.

use this. pretty much your only good option.

Applying the right kind of compression won't magically get rid of your problem, but it might make the recording more listenable. I wouldn't try it if you weren't confident, though.

compression usually will make loud sounds constant, while raising lower level (quieter) sounds.
Limiting will keep sounds from getting louder than a given level.
comp-limiting can help a bit if the crowd actually gets louder than the performance, usually between songs during applause & yelps & wolf-whistles
Experiment and test !

who's got that damn 'crowd de-noiser' plugin?

Why bother? The only people who are gonna care are the fanboy traders who don't have a clue about taping..the same people who think any Audio Technica stealth tape is the best pull in the world....pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffft 8)

WHOA WHOA WHOA....BACK IT UP THERE A MINUTE.....ELVIS IS STILL DOING SHOWS???? :o I thought he chocked to death on one of those bacon banana grilled slime sandwhiches taking a dump in the 70s....did you get yer flux capacitor to actually let you travel in time? Lets hook up and go record Jimi Hendrix playing 1983 at some untaped performance (he had to have played that song at some point in time somewhere..cmon). For real though, seeing Jimi is probably the #1 thing I would do if I had a time machine.

Uh....think he means Elvis Costello...

Way to crush my dreams >:(

No way. I taped Elvis with my minime! 24/192!

why not automate fader moves between songs? seems simple enough...
