Title: ADK TL users...windscreen question
Post by: spreadheadtom on September 19, 2005, 12:03:04 PM
anyone have problems with the stock windscreens?  are they thick enough to keep out the wind or do you use something else?

I ask this question because my stock windscreens with the AKG 414 XLS's are very thin.  this weekend I tried out one of the stock ADK and they fit rather nicely and are much beefier than what I have now.

thanks in advance!!

My experience with the stock ADK screens has been OK. In low wind conditions (say, about 10 MPH or less), they've been pretty effective. However, in the couple of times that I've used the ADK screens in higher wind, say about 15 mph+ (a show in St. Petersburg comes particularly to mind), I was picking up noticeable wind noise.

Some one around TS.com suggested the ws's for U87's. I gave them a try and they faired much better. They (the U87 screens - WS87) fit more loosely than the stock ADK ws's; but they were larger and extended further down the mic bodies. Had some wind to contend with at a show in Boise; and I didn't notice any wind noise at all.

I haven't done a side-by-side comparison to check results; but it seemed to me that the Neumann screens worked better. They even feel less porous than the ADK screens.

deadrats
Moke, did you make the deadrats for your ADK's or buy them?  I remember your post about them, but I believe they were from a different set of mics.  I'm getting a set of TL's soon so I'm interested to learn more about them.

I'll probably end up making some homegrown rats.  Good God are they gonna be huge. :)

do these "rats" kill the high frequencies?  my one experience with them on the schoeps did just that.  I had to create an 8dB HF shelf starting at like 10kHz to get it back to sounding decent.

/random comments.....carry on ;)

I use a pair of WS8x windscreens, though I can't remember which I got WS89 or WS87...

Mine fit really snug on the TLs, and come down further than the stock screens.  They are thicker and and seemed more dense than the stocks.

I recommend them.

Some quick research revelas this:

The U87 is 56mm in diameter, so I'm thinking a WS for it would also be about 56mm.  That converts to 2.02".

The U89 is 46mm in diameter, and by the same logic, the screens here is 1.81".

A quick ruler to my screens - mine are 1.75" diameter.  The TL diameter is approx. 2"...

I'm thinking I have the WS89 screens.  So I'd go with the WS87 screens to you.  I'm always afraid I'm going to rip mine getting them on or off...

Jacks' is the place (I think) I got them, but there is a $30 place on there now...

WS87 good for TLs, WS89 tight on TLs, but work... Hope this helps!!!

Thanks for all this info.....I might just go with the ws89's since my XLS;s are much smaller than the TL's

Just a quick note:  the 1.75" diameter I mention above is the INSIDE diameter (how big around is the hole where I stick my mic???), not the outside - the screen itself is about 4" diameter - its pretty big!

I have both the stock and ws87 screens, I like to use the stock screens indoors and the ws87's outside.  I ran them in Telluride mainstage with no issues and anyone is has attended knows how windy it gets...Just my experience.
