So I'm planning on taping Paul McCartney this friday in Philly but from what I've heard, the security is super tight, pat downs and wands/regular metal detectors. So; ssia... do jb3's go off? I'm gonna assume my mics won't hopefully they'll be in my shoe.
-
im going to say yes. but i dont know 100%
-
Let us know how it goes. I'm taping McCartney in November.
-
The security is supposed to be realllll tight after a fan ran onstage at the Tampa show... I'm taping him again in October.

that takes some balls, maybe we aren't giving the pirateer's enough credit... :(

I bet he was only trying to find a place to set his mic stand up.

Didn't you attend Stealthing 101? Punk it up for the show buddy. Go to the local Hot Topic and get a 3 row pyramid studded belt ($20) get the biggest badass belt buckel you can find (not a trucker hick ass one though) and fill your pockets with all sorts of metallic shit. Bring yer cell phone, a pack of smokes that are open (they'll check em and waste more time), a lighter, some loose change, yer earplugs in their plastic case, and yer wallet in a front pocket as well, and the keychain of course. Security are usually more concerned about getting people into the venue before the show officially starts than finding some guy whose taping. If you have a knife or gun the metal detectors are gonna go nuts but other than that don't sweat it. CROTCH ALL OF YOUR GEAR!
I've taken the JB3 through metal detoctors at least 7 times and it's never been noticed so I wouldn't worry about that. Granted, they were the wands, the walk through detectors might be a different story. Basically anything metallic sets off wands, even zippers, so the security usually isn't concerned unless of course it's going off in an area where theres no visible metal. Good luck.

Thanks for the laugh :) +t

I crotch the recorder beneath my hick ass trucker belt buckle ;) and sometimes hide the mics & batt box tucked in the badass asswhuppin' biker boots ;)
More important than hiding your shit is not looking liking you have shit hidden. Act normal, laugh & talk. I'm proactive, I actually voluntarily lift my shirt/jacket so security can see my beltline, before they even ask. And if you think you may be able to take photos, carry a camera in the open, makes it look like you have nothing to hide. If you want, carry a disposable so you can just toss it if they stop you. Give 'em something to catch, they don't look further.
And all of Evil Taper's suggestion will work. You'll also look like you escaped from a 1980's hair metal band, but that's the price we sometimes have to pay :D

I think he meant "ran" onstage as literally walking very fast across it...not "ran" as in ran tape.

Thank's for the tips... I"ll pick all of that shit up. And put up a pair of my best shit kickers. Country punk rocker or something. I've been hearing mixed reviews about the tour security now. Mics are going in the shoes. The jb3 will either be crotched or attached the the very top of my inner thigh with some heavy ass jeans. I'll be ok I think. I once told a guy my batter box was for my heart monitor... thank God he didn't question that any further. Maybe a metal altoids box too.

FWIW, I've gotten the NJB3 through pat-down security by holding it in my hand, attached to some headphones that were around my neck. They never even asked what it was. If they did, I'd say it was my MP3 player, becuase I don't want to listen to their horridly putrid house music.

Dude; that takes balls. At a low level concert I'd do that... but for Macca, I'm gonna have to just crotch it and go.

Nah, its not that bad dude! Well, at least at Macca, you'll be able to find a different entrance and try a different way if you don't succeed the first time!

McCartney last night in Atlanta was pretty much the same story as his shows at the same venue in 2002. Wands at the door and security walking up and down the aisles looking for cameras/recorders during the first 2 hours of the show. Last night I noticed paper signs up on the doors that stated "Any audio/video equipement confiscated will not be returned". The wand went off over my mic cables, interconnects, sax, r1 (probably due to the xlrs), so the guard asked me to lift up my shirt and he must not have noticed the bulge in my crotch but saw the belt buckle so I have to assume he was just looking for a belt buckle and let me thru. Stressful show to tape with all the black suits and security with headphones peering around, I taped down my levels from my last show and never looked at them until I had to do my R1 tape flip at the 2 hr mark. After that, I was home free. Show runs from about 8:40 - 11:35.

Thanks for the note; there are alreayd DVDs of some of the shows out already so it can't be that bad. I am a little weary of taping though, as this is the most "high profile" show that I will have ever attempted.

I was 33rd row on the floor about 2 ft from 2 security guards and the tour manager in the sbd cage. Any filmers on the floor would be toast. They typically hide up on the sides or upstairs where they're away from the real security.

Way to go!
How was the show? I last saw him in '89.
Great setlist. I was thinking it might be a greatest hits setlist like 2002 but Paul changed things up alot since that tour and this setlist has alot of pleasant surprises - especially if you avoid temptation of looking at the setlist ahead of time which I did. The line arrays they use are incredible as well. Doesn't hurt that Philips Arena is a really nice sounding room.
-
I've looked at the setlist only so I could know where the show is headed when I'm at it. I got busted taping Santana and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. I'm up in section 210 A in Philly Wacko, if anyones familiar so I"ll be a good bit away from any 'real' problems. But old lady ushers could be just as bad to deal with. Wish me luck on Friday guys.

My micrphones (audio technica cards or SP binaurals) and batter box fit into specially cut compartments into my shoes... do they go that low whne they're looking with the wand?

Last night at McCartney in Atl, they were wanding pretty thoroughly on pants/shorts but not down to the shoes. My one show at Wachovia Center, they just did a quick wand over the front of my shorts and it didn't go off but I had metal in a fanny pack in front of my shorts just in case it did so I could blame it on that.
-
I'm debating on whether or not to crotch with a belt buckle or hope that the wand doesn't pick it up and tape it to my back (which I've done before) hmm

When I saw him in 93 or 94 or 95, somewhere around there, it was SOOOOOO good.

did you succeed?
in funny related security talk...
last two shows I've recorded (queensryche @ mid size club) and Robert Plant at a mid sized theater
Ive seen people less than 5 ft from me get busted for smoking , taking pictures and trying to sneak into better seats.
all the while security is none the wiser about what I'm doing....
;D

Wasn't taping, but I got busted twice for smoking at a Page/Plant show at the VA Beach amphitheater.
All the while a guy directly in from of me 2 rows up was smoking a fatty the size of my thumb ::)
