You can't really do any harm by trying all of those options (except if you format all you will erase everything on it).

If you've got nothing important on there try them all. If not just skip format and see what happens.

just make sure you have the latest couple of firmware downlaods (1.32.02 and 1.40.06) and 'reload the os'

also make sure you have BOTH usb and firewire cables!

also make sure you have BOTH usb and firewire cables!

no doubt, it seems only one or the other will work for some people when updating firmware.

exactly, no clue why either!

So, I have Todd's JB3 in hand and am gonna try to fix it for him.

I opted to try formatting first. The unit has been showing "formatting" for a while now and I'm wondering what the time frame might be for a complete format. I'd assume it'd be a little while just because it's a 20gb drive. I am not, however, hearing the "clicking" noise, so I'm wondering if the unit may be frozen.

Feedback?

and like todd said,

JB3 boots to rescue mode and then:

1) format seems to freeze

2) reinstall OS gives a harddisk problem message

also,

I'm connecting via usb, my computer recognizes the JB3, but the JB3 doesn't seem to recogize that its connected to a computer. And no, I do not have a firewire cable.

Todd posted on another board and was told he was probably going to have to replace the motherboard.

input?

id say you need BOTH the usb AND 1394 cables, and you need to have 1.32.02 AND 1.40.06 firmware on your HD, when you do those things, in the rescue mode screen, simply select 'reload OS' and follow the instructions brian!

good luck!

Yeah Bean, I'm with you.

Todd didn't get a Firewire cable with his JB3. I've tried both firmware versions.

The message on my cpu says rebooting at which point I have to insert a pin into the bottom. Unit resets into rescue mode at which point I try to Reinstall OS, (following instructions provided with firmware).

It goes from rescue > Reinstall OS > "Harddisk Problem" > back to rescue mode.

I have tried formatting the drive. The drive clicks about 10 or so times then becomes silent and seems to freeze. I left it in the "frozen" condition for some time and when I felt confident it was frozen I reset via the pin in the bottom. Hopefully I didn't mess anything up.

Todd swears the unit was fine, he tried to start it and it went into rescue mode. In messing with the unit I feel like there are some battery issues? May or may not be true. May or may not make a difference. Also the power button on the left side is somewhat unresponsive.

Gotta go to work here shortly, but will keep at it til then.

BTW, is there a difference between firmware and OS? If so can I download a fresh OS?

Oh yeah, and until last night, I had never even held one of these units in my hand, so this is very new to me. Is it possible to go MiniMe>USB>JB3?

do you have the AC adapter ??? ine is finicky if it isnt powered w/ the AC when doing the OS reload

OS and firmware are the SAME THIUNG brian!

could you go mme>usb>jb3, NO!

if its flashing 'harddrive error' it may be SPENT, but what the hell happened to it for that to happen ???

Yeah AC Adapter is plugged in. I haven't messed with different battery/AC adapter configs yet, but I feel like the unit became more responsive when I took one of the batteries out. More to come on that later.

OS/Firmware, yeah I figured they were the same.

Any reason the JB3 can't accept a MME feed other than that the firmware hasn't been written for that?

And no it doesn't flash HD Error, just after I hit reinstall OS. It comes up where you would expect a message like "OS Reinstalling". Wondering whether I should leave the unit in formatting mode while I'm away at work for the next few hours.

I'm wondering with possible battery problems and HD Error message if the unit could possibly been hit by lightning or a power surge.

Maybe Todd will chime in when he gets home from work.

BTW, the unit shows:
Rescue mode v1.10
Boot v1.0, HW v1.0.225

and when I try to upgrade firmware: it says I have Firmware v1.20.06

If this means anything...

I think you need to use USB to load the FW from the most primitive versions. The reload-os version doesn't know about fire wire. Another trick is to open up your Device Manager in Windows and delete all the current USB hubs and controllers. Do your best to remove them all, a couple might be more stubborn. When you reboot, the system controllers and hubs will re-initualize and you'll be left with a clean slate. That will help the JB3 figure out it needs to make a new connection and hopefully you'll be able to downoad the firmware.

Make sure you have the latest drivers installed on your PC first too.
