I spoke to an insurance agent yesterday about coverage for my gear.. He said that I'd be covered while the gear is in my house but not outside. I described it as hobby (which is true right now).
Has anyone else looked into getting covered?

Hmm, I'd have to check my renter's insurance policy but I was pretty sure my gear's covered regardless of where it gets damaged or stolen. I'm sure each policy is different though.

My home owners policy covers my gear in or outside my house...but I guess it depends on the policy

Cool. Who are you guys insuring through?
He said musical instruments were not covered and I assume that's where these get lumped.
I have Liberty Mutual but like I said, I need to double check the policy.

OK, I am calling bullshit! Personal property is covered whether it is in or out of your home under any renter's/homeowner's policy, forms ho-4/ho-5. Musical instruments, at least our policies, are not excluded in the slightest. However, they coverage is not all peril, meaning that if you drop them and break them, there would be no coverage or something along those lines. However, coverage does exist, subject to your deductible, for all covered perils (wind, hail, theft, vandalism etc.). Unless your policy form specificall;y excludes coverage for musical instruments, which I seriously doubt, there is coverage. As an example, your personal property is covered under your renter's/ho policy when property is say stolen out of your vehicle. Your auto policy does not apply to any property not specifically and permanently attached to the vehicle (think cell phone mounts, permanent cd players, etc). Thus, I call bullshit, you were most likely lied to in my opinion. If you want, fax me your policy to 319-354-1401, and I will look over it for you and tell you what I see.
Take care, and I hope this is helpful.
