I need to elevate my mics and tip them downward to get a good pickup of a chamber music ensemble. Is there some sort of jointed adapter to put on the top of my mic stand so the Shure bar can be angled?
If so, what's going to keep the whole thing from wanting to topple over?

If you use some AT8410s, you should be able to angle the mics with those while keeping the vert bar vertical. For added heighth and angling capability, a goose-neck extension comes to mind. As for keeping the stand from toppling, either conterweight the bottom or angle the goose-neck backwards as well as down so the center of gravity remains over the stand, not in front of it. You'll sacrifice a little heighth but gain stability.

If you don't mind spending $15 to get one, you can buy the Olsen tbar (from cascade media and plenty of other places) and unscrew the adapter. That's what I did. The adapter is pictured in the top two pictures of this thread:

Duh, I should have thought of that. I have AT8410s.
But this leads me to another question: I have to reverse both sections of the Shure bare to get the mics far enough apart to keep the AT8410s from hitting each other in ORTF. This means the mic elements are not only 7" apart laterally -- they are also separated vertically by several inches. Won't t this have some kind of negative effect on the stereo image of my recordings?
