Title: DPA406x Soft Boost Grids
Post by: jefflester on October 05, 2005, 08:59:53 PM
I've been running Core Sound HEB DPA4061s (above ears) for about 7 years now. I've always used the short "soft boost" grids, figuring a slight high end boost was preferable to the exposed mic element, if not even desireable due to head absorbtion of the high frequencies. Does everybody else do the same?

However, I damaged one of the grids, ripped the screen out of the shell when it got caught on a ragged edge of the croakie that they live in. I managed to get the screen back in and it seemed to be okay, but it apparently doesn't quite stay seated as well because twice since then the whole cylinder piece has been pulled off and I thought I lost it. Found it both times, but I was clearly just lucky.

I found this place to buy some new soft boost grids, at 5 for $77 (plus shipping). I don't think I really need 5, though. I was wondering if anybody knows any other way to get them or if someone has bought a 5-pack and wants to sell me a couple, or someone who wants to buy a couple if I get a 5-pack.

Same thing happened to me this summer.  That little grid popped off, and I knew I was in for some new protection grids.  I got stuck buying the 5 pack.  I also knew those tiny little grids wouldn't be cheap.  It nearly killed me to spend that much on such little plastic.  I got a couple extra if you want to share costs.  $10 sound like a fair deal?

I run the 61's with the croakie.I dont know if either way the grids matter .Right now I am running one of each..I was in a panic after we broke down and ripped the grid off the mic..I taped with no grid with one mic and it didnt seem to matter pulled a smoker..I do have a few spares I will look around if you dont get one..

I sent Bill an email.

I don't think they make much difference in the sound (small 3dB hump), it's more that they provide some protection to the element. I just did a show last week also with one on and one off, though I was off to the side and next to a wall so it's impossible to tell what (if any) effect it had missing one.
