Title: Sony DW-22a DVD burner won't recognize CD's
Post by: kskreider on October 06, 2005, 06:31:41 PM
I got this p.o.s with my desktop VAIO.  All of a sudden it will not read OR write CD's.  It will read and write DVD's fine, just no CD's.

I have tried absolutely everything one could think of doing.  BIOS, Flashed firmware (for itself and the DRU-710a), updated drivers, rolled back to original drivers, XP system restore, old reg imports, etc.

Another other suggestions?

I am about 2 small screws away from turning this thing into a hammer party.

It may be on its way to that big case in the sky.
I had the same drive, but never had that exact problem.  Mine would not recognize CDs & DVDs sometimes, even if it was one I burned or the same brand I ususally used.   I could usually "force" it to read it by putting in the disc, & rebooting.
Then the drive became stuck on PIU instead of Ultra DMA, took sooo long to read/burn a DVD.  I eventually gave up & replaced it when it started doing everything at max of 1X ::)

Good luck.

Anyway, thank goodness I am only $40 away from another badass NEC DVD-R/W drive.

Yeah, the way prices have come down it's not worth but so much trouble trying to fix it.

I got to jump from a 4X drive to 16X by replacing, as well.  So that made it a little easier to do it :)
