Title: Mics for M/S opinion/help..
Post by: beanstalk on October 12, 2005, 01:55:10 PM
Going to try out M/S for the first time this weekend need some help on what mics to run? I wish I had some Schoeps, but oh well.

Here's what I got:
Mics-- 2xADK A-51 TL, (onloan) 2xAKG SE300B w/ ck91/92/93/94
and a VMS 5U (onloan)

Would do ya'll think would work best for a large club? Multiple opinions are much appreciated...

I would reccomend using the TL's and do the M/S mixing in post

i'd use the ADK's for both the cardioid and fig. of 8.

but i guess it wouldn't hurt to try using the akg fig. of 8 mike instead.  it might be a nice blend with the ADK's.

I'd definitely use the adk for "mid"(cardioid) microphone though. it's a nice sounding cardioid...better than the akk 300 series for sure, IMHO.

I was also thinking on running 2 rigs and trying to grab up another TL from my homeboy. So maybe a M/S TL's on one with the VMS 5U and one TL card and ck91 with a V2>UA5(A/d). May lose the UA-5 though.

preserving the Mid and Side into separate channels and mixing down in post allows you to adjust the mix of each channel and try different settings to achieve the desired sound stage.

Yup.  Doing this on the fly in a loud environment is very, very difficult.  Best to do it in post.

Going to go with the TL card and ck94... I'll see how the TL/AKG comes out with post comes out and do the 2xTL another time. Only have the AKG's for another week. Thanks for the input ya'll.  ;)

Anyone ever run VMS 5U with other mics besides Schoeps? Seems like a pretty tight pre.
