Was just considering building an extension for my 4061 cable so I can have more slack when they're up in the air. They terminate in a gold mini plug now so would putting an extension or splitter between that and my recorders make any differance?

you need to watch for a voltage drop, though at the length im sure you are talking about it's probably not a big deal. also cheap cable sounds like junk.

well scraps to that then.

I did a post on this a few months ago.. Should be on here somewhere. Basically, I compared the impact of 40' of starquad to no star quad.
I was surprised that I couldn't really measure an obvious difference in the amplitude or frequency of test tones. I think I ran some music through them too. Keep in mind that star quad conductors are much heavier than the typical 3.5mm extension cable (though 'heavier' can cause other problems).
So, I don't really worry about extending to my 4061's using SQ. You also mentioned splitters.. Those are a different beast..

I'd be running 5-10' max. That's all I'll need, so no worries?
