Title: Mics or Pre?? Need to know....

Been runnin when I can for the last year +/-.  Octava mc012 (cards)>>DMIC>>C02>>JB3.  Been trying my damndest to clean up the bottom end with different setups.  All of my good pulls have been FOB's and outside.  Inside is tougher but still have some luckies here and there.  I am just wondering if I would be silly to think that a pair of fire mics would help me out considering my rig.  I know that there are better Pre a/d 's out there now but I kinda think there is some merit to thinking that this old dmic can still make some good tapes with a little help out front.  Somebody let me know the deal on this.  I have been considering trying some AKG c4000b's.  Daydream about the idea of a clean large diaphram mic w/ diff patterns....

I'd say mics.  I ran Oktavas for a while with a UA-5 & liked them, but thought something was missing.  I went to a pair of Josephsons & love the sound of my tapes since the switch.

if its within your budget...sell your oktavas..and get my audix for sale(http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=44867.0 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=44867.0))....i ran oktavas long ago....i believe these are a huge step in the right direction....imho.....the dmic is fine....im a firm believer that mics make the most difference for the price point...however, IF you could get a w-mod ua5 and sell the dmic/co2, i think that would ehlp a ton too...highway jill runs that combination, and she has some good pulls...check out Green Lemon on the archive..you can hear that combination.  Best of luck.
