Hey, how graceful is the sbm-1 about clipping?  just wondering how hot i can run this thing off the 148 for ymsb

faint, quick flashes of red...enaything longer than that and you will have audible artifacts

With my SBM-1 red is 1.5-2 dBFS....couple times I thought I cooked the tape and found minimal clipping...as with all Sony's anything less than 5 on the level knob could brickwall.

this is not the case with oade modSBM units though.

I paid particular attention to this last Friday and generally agree, but you can definitely push it to the limit of "quick flashes"...you generally are OK even if the lights look like they "stick" on for a moment. IMO.
