I'm looking for an inexpensive solution for warming up the sound of my jwmod 460's>V3. There has been a good deal of talk on the m148 or psp2 or Aerco's being capable of the task, but they're hard to find and I'm wondering about the Shure and SD devices. I realize I'd be dealing with 2 xtra pieces of gear, but they are quite small and AA powered. Both have adjustable gain. Is that a problem with the adjustable gain on the V3? The M148 is fixed gain, right? I thought about running an MP2 or FP24 into the V3, but don't really need or want 2 sets of lights.
All my other mics sound great going into the V3, but these jw's are just a tad too bright.
Thanks

The mp1 is only one channel. If you run Mics into a single channel, how lose variable gain. If your mics are spot on matched, maybe thats not a problem. Is it even possible to send a stereo signal into a single xlr jack?

My post mentions needing a pair.

If you specifically don't want lights you can turn them off on the mp-2, not the mixpre though.
I think this will add the warmth you are looking for IMO.

I would buy a mp2 or the like. Sanjay nailed it, Either turn off the lights, or just put a piece of tape over it. Then its only one extra box. Plus I think it would be cheaper then 2x mp1s

I'm kinda leaning in that direction. Then if need be I could run the MP2/FP24 solo and use the A/D on my recorder for a real small package.
Or there is always this scenario: sell the V3(which I really don't want to do)use the money from the V3 and the money I would spend on the MP2 or FP24, plus the money I'm thinking of spending on a microtrack and buy 722. Now that would work 8).

While you may be joking, I think that is your best option. I did not like the mod460s with the V3 - I sold the V3 after running it a couple times with those mics. The V3 is a great piece of gear, but in my opinion just doesn't match with those mics as well as other gear does. I would not personally want to pair the V3 with either of those preamps you mentioned.
Slim down your gear bag instead of increasing its size!

The zen moment of Taping. Slim down. I went v2>MME to V3. The feeling of having your gear ready to go in a Nova 5 is priceless. ;D

FWIW only the mp-2 can shut off the lights, the FP-24 is equivelant to an older mixpre.
I run the FP-24 with no A/d and its great as is, however I think a mod sbm-1 is made to go with it. you could change from your v3 to that.

If you like the 722 sound w/o an external pre, that's a helluva way to go! And even if you find yourself preferring an external pre in front, like a V2, you could use the 722 standalone for a while...and then add the V2 later once you scrounge more cash.

That does make the most sense, economically speaking. But throwing a V2 in front would give me that same harsh sound I'm getting now with these JW's. I think a more sane move would be to switch mics, and keep the V3.

Maybe, maybe not. You still have the warmer 722 in the mix. And you could simply skip the V2 outright and run straight 722.

Heh...that was gonna be my first suggestion, but I got the impression (why, I have no idea) you were set on keeping the mics.

Good point, use the V2 when needed. As far as the mics, who knows. What I do know is I have gone thru many mics in the last 2 years, so switching again is always an option. I kinda like the 722 with a V2 on the side idea though. I think it's time to take a close look at all my gear, maybe have a garage sale and see about a 722. 8)

Ive thought about this same thing w/ my 480's, but for every tape i dislike a slight bit and is harsh/bright, there are 3-4 that are almost perfect IMO, so i stuck w/ the combo, id LOVE to have an m148>v3 and run the v3 at a slight HPF(50/75Hz) to take away from the slight boom I hear when running that combo
-
Your right bean, they're not all harsh sounding. I'm starting to think 148. Your'e saying akg>148>v3 can be boomy? How many 148 versions are there?
The bass on the jw's is real tight, I'd hate to boom it up.
