Title: Schoeps MK41 and ORTF?
Post by: lyle on November 06, 2005, 01:35:08 PM
Wondering if anyone uses ORTF with MK41's? I've read Most like DIN/NOS but how much difference is there and does anyone like these run ORTF? I am asking because I have the fixed ORTF MSTC 64g and want to see about adding the MK41's but not if this orientation produces poor results. Thanks for opinions.

The ORTF config specifically calls for cardioids.  Running hypers ORTF may produce a "hole in the middle" effect due to the tighter pattern with the wide angle.  Give it a try and see if you like it.  IF you get the hypers, you might also consider:

<1> DIN (http://www.cascademedia.net/products.asp?catid=124&prodid=480) and/or DINA (http://www.cascademedia.net/products.asp?catid=124&prodid=481) Kwonbars
<2> Vark bar (http://www.posthorn.com/Macvk_4.html) + SGC (http://www.posthorn.com/S_coletteaccess.html#table5) clips.

Thank. Yeah, thats what I was wondering. I'd like to know if people who've tried this actually hear a "hole in the middle" effect? Real life experience not theoretical.

ORTF refers to the spacing between the capsules. 17 centimeters
If you run cardioids they should be 17 cm apart at 110* angle
if you run hypercardiods the spacing is the same 17 cm but the angle should be 90*
I have been running mk-41's  ORTF for 15 years with some impressive results.

thanks

I would imagine the 17cm-90* spacing would essentially be PAS most of the time..  all obvious exceptions here and there..
and yes.. you can produce impressive results that way..     edit: especially witht he 41's

I am sure it would work fine...I have mostly used DINA, but have used ORTF a few times with good results
