I have all but settled on buying this excellent piece of equipment. Only 2 simple questions remain:
1. Is it possible to make field recordings? I only see 9VAC input and it's hard to find outlets in the street!
2. What do you think is the "best mate" for recording? MIcroTrack? R1? JB3?
Discuss.

Before you get flamed, let me suggest that you try using the search button. There is a TON of information on this piece of equipment and both of your questions.

FIRE!!
V3>MT(24bit) is where it's at as far as I'm concerned. I think that I've finally reached recording nirvana.

There is a plug to run it off of a battery source. So you can use your fav batteries. I use to run it off of a 9.6v battery.
I would say MT2496. SPDIF>SPDIF
R1 = no digital
JB3 = Need to have the mod done to send a optical signal

Or pick up a Hosa ODL-276 or ODL-312 digital format converter. Whaddya know...I even have an ODL-312 for sale (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=52811.0). :)

Depends if your goal is 24-bit or 16-bit. If 24-bit, I'd say MicroTrack 2496 - or hang tight to see how the market shakes out. If 16-bit, a JB3 (with optical mod or ODL-276 / ODL-312) or D8.

Boy is my face red!
With all the talk of V3 this and V3 that, I thought I was getting a killer deal!

D'OH! I am willing to bet the converters are probably crap on this thing, considering the price.
Still it may be a nice step-up for a MicroTrack...hmmm
On another note, I been talkin to some of my engineer pals and they swear by Apogee converters.
I wonder how the V4 and SD722 stack up against the MiniMe!

At the quality level of the V3, 7xx, and MiniMe, they all sound excellent - it's more a matter of personal taste.

I heard the v5 cooks you breakfast, and automatically spits out masters, and tells chatty people to be quiet, and saves your soul....

Hey Ace I think you may be confusing two products.
You provided the link for the ART V3 which is CONSIDERBLY different from the Grace Designs Lunatec V3. Most folks here that have a V3 run the Lunatec and not the ART. Actually this is the firat time I have seen the ART V3 so.....
Good Luck!

Yeah I totally confused products. The ART V3 is intriguing with it's analog tube warmth, but we all know those things are delicate and probably not the best for field use. The more I think of it, the idea of carrying around multiple boxes sounds like a pain. I may just say to hell with it and spring for an R4...if only Oade would put out that MOD,,,argh

24 bit copies will go up later this week.

the Lunatec v3 was my saving grace when I started out recording. a/d converter built in, and a spdif out, and it can run off external power, and it provides phantom power and it can be modified for an optical out, and its super easy to use, and .........

The V3 is a fantastic piece of gear and it works great in front of my Marantz PMD-671.
Anybody want to sell one cheap? ;D

Grace v3>MT2496 works like a charm. Smallest 24bit capable setup IMO.

You really think so? I guess I dont have a good reference point for size because the V3 seems kinda bulky to me. Maybe someone here could take a snapshot of it next to a pencil or something. The Marantz 671 seems more compact to me.

but the 722 is smaller than a v3 :)

The 671 is definitely bigger than a V3. Here's a pic of both in a Lowe Pro Nov 5 bag

That's a V2, no? Are the V2 & V3 the same size?
