Hey all
another confused jb3'er
I just got my V3 back from grace, and honestly, it looks the same to me
Im not sure what the optical part is supposed to look like
then I got this from cascade media
http://www.cascademedia.net/products.asp?catid=142&prodid=779
and I can't even see how this fits in the jb3, let alone the v3
??? ??? ???
Ill post some pics if that would help clarify

The V3 opti-mod's optical output is just above the S/PDIF coax output. It has a sliding door that will open as you push in the cable. The V3 and the cable you linked both have toslink connectors - V3 female, cable male. The JB3 has a mini female optical connector. So, you need an adapter to change the other end of the cable's male toslink connector to a mini male connector. Check the Cables forum for other optical cables and/or adapter options, starting with this one:

I think Grace didn't do anything to it, cause neither end of my cable can fit into it ???
-
That does NOT have the optical mod.
-
wtf! Grace!
-
yep, that is definitely not an optical connection. Oops! :P

That does NOT have the optical mod.
265 dollars later all I can do is laugh (until the open shop on monday)

-
DMN bro, i am sure grace will make that right REEAL QUICK tho ;)
you are supposed to get a whole new back plate, thats def not right

It was 195, but I had to add 20 bucks for expediated shipping back to me, and I overnight fedexed it (~45 bucks), cause I *wanted* to use it at a slip show this thurs, and I wanted to make sure it got back to me by then
and on top of all this, frank sent me a female/female toslink cable :'(

Why not just use your MT and record at 24 bit?

That's a beautiful bathroom sink you have there, what's the blurry blob on top of it? ;)

Just got word from Grace, that they will right the wrong ;D

so what did they do to it?
apparently the *did* nothing, maybe it got put in the finished pile instead of the to be fixed pile.
They said that they would pay for fedEx theere and back and of course *do* something to it this time
all's well that ends well I suppose >:D

I would "suggest" that they pay for the orginal overnight shipping also, since you were garunteed delivery of a service on a specific date and didn't get it.
They will, I talked to Grace himself 8)

their handling of the situation doesn't surprise me. Grace customer service has always been top-notch. just too bad that you've got to send in your V3 again...
-
Great! No matter if its taping equipment or whatever its really nice to know that we have some great, trustworty vendors that right any wrongs and put out quality products. If this was some other product what kind of service have we all come to expect? Usually shitty service. Mike Grace is one of us and i'm glad he is going to right this situation and do it quick.

the MT works good too, I just want to get the JB3 running so Ill be unstoppable!
>:D

Just got the v3 back from Grace, WITH the modification in back, and hey overnighted it and they threw in a Grace hat :)

good to hear that they took care of the V3, and that they took care of you :)
now, I wonder where I can get a grace hat... ;)

Do those even exist? I've never seen one. The link you provided to Cascade is a male>male toslink.

maybe it is, but it doesnt have the miniplug that goes INTO the jb
all is right with the world 8)

sonds like toslink>toslink instead of toslink>mini optical

yeah grace is super with service. i see jamie from the workshop out at shows pretty often too.
-
I had a good experience with Grace customer service as well.

Very true...sure doesn't have a mini plug. Just FYI, here's a link to an adapter. I used to use one of these w/ my JB3 and liked that it was rt. angle and would swivel.

that cablestogo site has some awesome plugs, like a toslink splitter, and a coax to toslink converter

A few quick notes:
<1> According to casual tests by some TSers a while ago, some passive toslink splitters do not work with the JB3. Since they're passive, they're not amplifying the signal, and the split signal is too weak for the JB3 to lock onto reliably. I would not recommend using a passive splitter with your JB3, but if you really need it, try it and see if it works for you. It may, it may not.
<2> Not all digital format converters (coax to toslink converters) are created equal. The one CablesToGo offers (http://www.cablestogo.com/product.asp?cat%5Fid=504&sku=40018) looks to me like the infamous "grey box" DFC with which some users encountered problems - namely dropped samples or artifacts - during informal testing. The Hosa ODL-276 coax <--> optical converter has proven completely reliable with the JB3 and commonly used ADCs. I think there's even one for sale in the Yard Sale forum. FWIW, it's sister DFC, the ODL-312 AES <--> optical also has proven completely reliable. Both are available new at Full Compass for ~$60 shipped if you call (higher if you order direct from their webpage). So if you dig the CTG DFC, go for it, but know that it may or may not work reliably.
<3> Some have encountered problems with optical adapters, especially right-angle adapters. Others have not. I always liked the integrated right-angle toslink to right-angle mini cable. No adapters necessary, right-angles for compactness. Best price I've found is MCM, old thread about it here (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=42369.0).

I tried to buy one from MCM, but they are out of stock till feb. thanks for the tip on the converter stuff! ;D

He runs a Mini-Me, right? ;)
-
Just a heads up.
Most Sears stores with an electronics department carry Toshiba optical cables with included mini format adapters.
In smaller towns, it may be the only place you have a chance to find them in stock, in a hurry.
