Title: jk labs mg210
Post by: georgeh on November 16, 2005, 10:32:42 AM
Anyone run this config.? I'd prefer to keep my M148 for the pre but would be interested in hearing this.  I searched but no results here, odd thought for sure there would have been.
thanks
george

though JK Labs has not been around since March so finding a new unit is unlikely

So, no selling your's.  I take that as you like the set up.
Have you compared that to the >M148> ?
I treid about a year ago to get info from them and no luck

I was the previous owner of that JK Labs rig and ran it with a m148 once...honestly, I didnt like the results with the m148(ran a v3 behind it for a/d)...the m20 is a warm cap and the added warmth/punch of the m148 was too much for me.
I preferred it straight into the v3...ymmv

with my setup the jk box is not a preamp, it just acts as the bodies.  I use the psp2 or another pre to power the mics themselves.  as far as I know, mine is the only box like this (no phantom, just pass through).  there are some akg users on the board that have a jk box that acts as a pre.  (charlies, toddr) are a couple.........

it's all a moot point anyway, jon is gone.  mine was the last box made, #23.

Is there any way to contact the jk labs company?

Actually, my ECMS-22 is just like yours, but for AKG caps.  It just powers the capsules and acts as the mic bodies, it is not a preamp and doesn't add gain.

Great box, really glad I got it and I have no intentions of getting rid of it.  I just hope Jon re-emerges at some point in case I ever need servicing.

Todd, I thought you would know by now that here are plenty of folks down on Colfax that will "service" you :D

Yeah, no doubt Brad.  And probably cheaper and easier to locate than Jon as well. ;D

Tim -- I haven't done anything to shore up the active cables.  Not much to be done, it doesn't seem.  The cables don't even seem very easily replaceable since they head up into the active heads and are all covered up with epoxy.  Seems you'd pretty much have to replace the whole active assembly, not just the cables.

As I recall, Jon uses some kind of biasing battery, along with the 9v battery my ECMS takes.  I have no idea how long it lasts or what the replacement battery is.  I guess when the time comes, I'll pull it all apart to figure it out, but I don't want to mess with it now.  It'd be nice to confer with Jon though to get a sense of how many record hours it will last for.
