I have seen a bunch of guys lately using a 4 mic setup.. can anyone explain to me the purpose of 4 mics, rather than 2?
curious!

so that they can use their mixer, duh!
seriously, i'm not sure why you'd use more than two, but i just haven't been schooled yet.
i'd assume it would be to capture more of the 'live sound' that you get from 'being there'.
captures more than just two channel, room noise, etc

What config were the mics??? What type of caps were being run???
I'm not positive, but my guess would be that they were running 2 cards(or maybe hypers) and 2 omnis... 2 of which would be in a stereo config (XY, ORTF, or DIN) and the other 2 would be in a spilt omni config...
That's just a guess though...
If that's what was being run, they were probably trying to get the best of both worlds (cards and omnis) into one pull...
Again, that's just a guess...

Wayne had a great post on this very subject recently:

BIG difference, IMO, between the pure omnis, pure cards, and omni + card mix.
