Title: Just got a HiMd- some questions
Post by: GNRArnold on November 30, 2005, 12:27:33 AM
Hi,
I just got a HiMD RH910 to record(mostly stealth) concerts. I'll be using an ECM717 mic. Tonight I recorded a rock show with it- I had the mic powered by its battery running into the Line In with the Mic Setting at Low Sens since the manual suggested that for loud rock shows. While playing back the show, everything came out nice and clear but I need to have it at near full volume or full volume thru headphones to hear it- did I choose a wrong setting or is this just the way the MD plays it back(IE will it sound better once transferred to my computer). Any suggestions on what to use for stealth loud rock shows- Line In/Mic In? High or Low Sens? Standard or Loud music mode? Any advice would be much appreciated.

A friend of mine gets good results running his ECM-717 (with battery) into his Minidisc mic-in.  In regards to the low-sens/standard/loud modes, he manages his levels manually.  I believe you can set manual levels on the new HiMD's.

I've found that the headphone amp on the Hi-MD is quite weak.  It'll probably sound much better on your PC.

i just recently purchased a rh910,i upgraded from an mzr3.yes,the headphone amp is apparently a little weak.my mzr3 has a separate audio line out(and a digital line out) which i would use to run the signal directly into my sony rcdw500 c cd recorder(stand alone) i dont use computers for any kind of music transfers.the new rh910 does not havea audio(stereo mini plug) line out just the line out to run it into a computer-whatever the plug is called.so.. i run a mini plug from the headphone jack into(the cord is a 1>2 type cord   w/r stereo) two rca's into my cd recorder.sounds silly but it works out fine.if i monitor the recording while i am transfering it,it sounds a bit lower than when i listen to it on playback from the cd.it may just be from the recording level on the cd recorder,it havent looked into it too much since it seems to work out for me. the unit also has a 6 band digital eq which i can make some adjustments to the sound while transferring it.
as far as recoding lines.i have always used the mic in on my mzr3( i havent taped with he rh910 yet).make sure to adjust your levels  manualy,DO NOT trust the unit to do it for you.i have had a few overly bassy and distorted recordings because of it.its a solid unit overall,as with most sony products.

I find it strange that you would spend extra for a HiMD, then not use some of it's more beneficial features, such as high speed digital transfer of your analog recorded audio. I too have used a standalone CD burner for MD transfers, well before the ATRAC3 days. Even then, I would only use digital connections to try and save what little was left of my audio fidelity. But if it works for you, good times!  :)

the rh910 only has a digital line in,mic in,headphone line out and the line out that would go to the computer.which doesnt help me because my computer is completely outdated and doesnt even have a burner on it,nor any editing software. i primarily bought the unit to be able to run a show on a single disc, and to get a smaller unit,as the mzr3 is almost twice its size.i really dont even use half of the features on it:)

Your HIMD has a USB plug on it.  Look on the right side where the AA battery and wall charger plug in.  There is a sliding tab that you can move to reveal the USB port.  Download sonicstage and upload your recordings to you computer.

no, i know the port IS on the mdr,but like i said earlier,i dont even have a cd burner on my computer so it doesnt do me any good.which is why i was talking about running the signal from the headphone out straight into my stand alone burner.everything i do is strictly done on my home audio/vdeo setup.

I have the MZNHF800 unit, used to do mic in and would get a bit of clipping on quick high spots. When I started using line in it took care of the clipping but the volume is much lower. Crank up the recording level when you transfer it to disc. I usually end up having to do it twice as the unit I burn on only lets me crank up to +12. Usually get a decent volume at around +16 - 18.

I'm thinking about getting the MZRH910 unit. Any gripes/praises on your unit so far?

Thanks
Ron

I have a MZ-NH1 and a Plug-in-Power microphone. I use it Mic In, Mic Setting at Low Sens, Manual volume at 18/30 for classical music concerts, so I suppose you should adjust it at no more than 14/30 initially, and then check to avoid overloading. I am getting wonderful recordings.

Can you adjust recording levels manually with the NH1?

Yes, you can. You must go to the Rec Settings while recording is on (you can pause it) and then under Rec Volume choose Manual instead of AGC.

Cheers for that  ;)

no, no complaints at all.
