Title: DPA 406x stealthing mounts w/o clips?
Post by: dmaster on November 30, 2005, 05:10:54 PM
Okay, so i got a pair of DPA 4061's today... but I'm stupid and I forgot to order clips with them.   So, I need a last-minute easy way to mount these things in a hat without potentially damaging things.  (no windscreens for padding either for what it's worth).

they're significantly smaller than either the SP CMC-4's or the SS DSM's that I've made up elastic or velcro combos for and i'm not sure that would be the best idea with these mics...

I think I'm gonna get clips for the future, but I've got a show tomorrow night (and miraculously they came in before then, huge thanks to Jeff at Cascade for that!) and I need some easy suggestions.

I think someone said they used a small binder clip. You could also go out and find a pair of croakies  :)

I tape them to my glasses with black cloth tape, at the points where the glasses arms pass by my sideburns.  Black mics against black sideburns :)

well I hope you did not forget to order the windscreens too, though I fear you might have, if you do have the windscreens just go down to your local 7/11 or Lidz or whatever near you sells those Git Er Done type cheap baseball hats with the screens in the rear, put that sucker on backwards and stick those mics up in the mesh portion of the hat, or slightly on the right and left temples, then you have your mics flown high, facing directly forward, no clips needed, I tape this way and wear a hoodie and run the mic cables down the back of my neck where they are hidden by the bill of the baseball cap and my hoodie hood, very much helps to tape the mics flat against the mesh too so they don't float around during the show, woo hoo problem solved!!! good luck and happy taping!

Buy a black hat, cut holes and pop the mics through the holes just enough so they are out. Done.  :)

I wouldn't screw around, bite the bullet and get the DPA DMM0004 clips (about $15-20 a piece).  They are much easier on the cabling and give a slight amount of dampening.  The you can clip them to a baseball cap, glasses, collar....shit, I have cliped them onto a drink glass with pretty good results.  If you go ghetto, it will be hard on the cabling.

that is some good advice. +t

although, i think d00d said he was in a pinch, in which case, i would go with the tape around the glasses (if you wear them) or the in hat method (if you dont wear glasses)...

just dont use electric tape (and if you do, un do your rig as soon as you get home, and go over the taped areas with rubbing alcohol and a paper towel. and tape the cables, not the mic bodies...

and if you didnt get windscreens, dont put them in a hat - put them on glasses...

but get the clips asap. $15 for clips is alot cheaper than replacing a cable you screwed up by jerry-rigging something...

good luck.

so grider - do you wear a sweatshirt and hood indoors..?

okay yes I'm a moron and forgot to get the windscreens with the mics... so I guess I'm gonna try to clip them to the bill of a hat with binder clips.  Seems like the best idea I can come up with before getting something a bit more "refined" done.

We'll see how it goes.   It's not a stealth-required show, but the mics will have to be worn regardless cause it's one of those kinda venues...  but I'm pretty sure as long as they're just stabilized it won't suck too bad?

I'll have screens and clips for the future, but thanks a bunch for the suggestions for now!

just so you know, these 406X are pretty windresistant.  You can use windscreens but I have been in a very windy situation and gotten pretty minimal windnoise.  I have a Phish Gorge 7-12-2003 and 7-13-2003 where the wind ruined everyone's recording back in the section, I ran upfront DFC (15-20 rows back) with those things in the DMM0004 clips on my BB cap at my temples and no windscreens.  There is some phasing due the wind blowing the high frequencies around a bit but minimal wind sheer noise over the mic themselves.  I would estimate that gusts were in the 20-25mph region, and blowing constantly at 7-10mph.

apologies for the lack of quality of the pics, I only had my cellphone, and it's assss for taking pics in a dark venue.

clips are on the side of the hat at the temples.   Mics are on the inside as initially I figured the hat was going to be worn... but it ended up sitting on the ledge of the balcony rail instead, which I think worked out for the best.

(now to get some real clips and screens....)
