Title: Stealth Rig (little help)
Post by: dmbphan041 on December 03, 2005, 12:10:27 AM
Hey guys,

I'm looking for a stealth set up on the cheap/cheaper end of things, cause I'd only want to tape 1-2 shows a year at first. I'm looking to spend probably about $300 max. Also being from Canada not sure if that would make a difference (the US probably has better/less expensive equipment.)

 :)

With a $300 dollar budget (CDN or otherwise) the easiest way to go would be MD and a Sony mic.  I don't know if the new HiMD models would be in your range or not, but certainly the older MD models with the 1/8" mic input on them would do just fine.  Check the yard sale forum to see if anyone's selling their old MD rig.

AT853 --> Sound Pro battery --> JB3
($150)      ($70)                       ($150)

A little over your budget but great none the less. Avoid MDs IMO. Lossy recordings are no fun. The extra $70 would be well worth it. You could use this as open gear should you choose to do more in the future.

very solid choice > go with this one

The SP-CMC-4 (AT853) is on sale at Soundprofessionals.com for $149 or so through the holidays.

Stay away from the MD, and the sony mic.  You'll thank us later.

Do NOT get a cheap Sony mic. Your best bet is either Church Audio cards/omnis ($120) or AT853 (CMC-4U).

Then you could possibly buy a used Batt box in the yard for quite cheap. Then try and get an Iriver h1xx/h3xx if possible. If not, try a Hi-MD so at least you have the option to record in PCM.

This should keep you within your budget.
