I hate asking a question this basic, but it's been so long since I had a manual slr camera that I've forgotten. Can you change lenses on a manual slr w/o fear of exposing the film?

at least as long as you don't lift up the mirror, and try to poke your fingers through the shutter blades.. of course, if you did that, I'd be more concerned about the damage you just did to the shutter, and not really worry about the film. ;D
Why don't more manufactures take the film out of the canister first, and then as you shoot it, wind it back into the canister. When I worked at a camera store, the only one that did that was the rebel 2000

my rebel did that, but i forgot what model it was, coulda been the 2000.

because film is relatively cheap (especially if you bulk roll it) and people shoot through it pretty fast on some slrs.
