Title: New computer and a few questions
Post by: bagtagsell on December 15, 2005, 03:16:08 PM
I just built a new computer.  It has dual ethernet inputs.  I have tried both singularly and they time out.  I tried two at once and they time out, any ideas?

I have a raptor as my main hard drive.  I put an 8 gb windows partition on it, how do I partition the rest?

Make sure that you have installed the drivers for the network cards.  You can see if you have the correct drivers by going to the Device Manager.

Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware tab > Device Manager button.

Check and see if there are any wierd symbols next to "Ethernet Controller" or anything similar.  If you have not popped in the disc that came with your motherboard, then this is most likely the cause of the problem.  I assume that the dual NICs are integrated into your motherboard.

I would update to the most recent drivers (for all devices) from the mobo manufacturer website.

Partition wise; you can do it all manually via fdisk, but I recommend and use Partition Magic 8. VERY handy program especially when managing a bunch of partitions and drives.

Good Luck!

What version of windows? If it's W2k or xp then you can right click on my computer and go to "manage". then choose "disk management". You'll notice the unpartitioned part of your raptor. right click on that and choose create partition. Then format it NTFS. There should be an option to format in the partition wizard.

When you say that the ethernets time out, what do you mean? Are you tring to ping annother address and the ping request times out? You may just need to setup your IP addresses. If you dont have a router or a server that is setup to issue DHCP then you will definatly have to specify the IP addresses. Note that when you have 2 ethernet cards, only one can be setup w/ a gateway.

segate has a wonderful tool to install drives.  So I got that nailed down.

The problems I am having with the internet are very strange.  I can't post on TS, but I can browse and pm.  I couldn't get my bank's website to work.  Windows won't update itself.  But I can google.

You're not running either the Windows Firewall or another firewall somewhere?

The problems you're having sound like a firewall issue to me.

I would double check your IP settings, and make sure they're correct.

IP setting wouldn't create the issues he's having. If it were IP settings he would not be able to connect to the Net at all.

When I was having DNS problems, I was able to connect to some pages, but not all.  That's why I thought it might be an issue with IP settings... good luck with the problem.

I understand your point, and sometimes restarting the DNS Client service on an XP workstation will clear things like that up. However, he's able to connect to sites, but not access certain functions on those sites - which to me sound like either a firewall issue or a caching issue. Without some reply by him, though, we're all shooting in the dark.

I'd turn off the firewall and see if he can replicate the errors. If not, it's the firewall.

If the errors are still evident, clear the page cache (Tools > Internet Options > Delete Files). Close and re-open all browser windows and try those pages again.
