Well i'm about to tape my first show this weekend and was reading up on the MME and was wondering if anyone uses the soft limit or compression. Is this a good thing to use or not. Sound good to me because it avoids the clipping, but i could be wrong. Are there any good or bad experiences with this?

what are you taping?

moe. and keller williams this weekend

I think that you want to use soft limit when the audience is gonna be louder then the music. So for acoustic stuff.

sounds good to me

yeah, alex is right, i wouldn't use it for either of those keller is loud enough to not have to use it. I would try and get my levels where you see yellows some and an occasional red, but I m just one of those guys who just hates the soft limit, I just dial in at the levels I want

I don't know for Keller. I saw him at GOTV and his sound was all over the place. Some passages were really quiet with insane transient peaks. I didn't use the soft limit with him on that night, but I most definitely would in the future. He was just too damn difficult to set the levels to.
moe. definitely does not call for soft limit.
Never use the compression! For anybody!

Amen. I fooled around with it at home when I first got my MMe. It is something that you definately will never want to use for live music recording. Any of the "push-it" compression settings will fuck up your tapes!
