Okay .. I'm stumped.
I transferred three SBD DATs for someone on TS over the weekend. Tascam DA-20MKII > M-Audio Pre > Dell Latitude D800 > Sound Forge.
First two DATs transferred fine. Listened in M-Audio Pre headphones a few times to make sure everything was okay. Saved the files as WAV in Sound Forge, and loaded the third DAT. Again listened to the headphones a few times, everything was fine. Saved the file as WAV, but it saved at about half the file size of the first two, even though all three DATs were two-hours plus. All three recordings are 44Hz 16-bit.
The third WAV file plays back at double speed. The first 30 seconds are normal speed, and then it goes into chipmunk mode. The rest of the recording is double speed.
Any ideas (remember that I listened to all three DATs as they played, so this is not a DAT transport error).

sounds like the sample rate is changed somehow

are you sure there recorded 44.1/16 and not 48/16?
i had this also one time and it had to do with bitrate setting, i changed to the recorded bitrate and it was all fine.

^ are you sure there recorded 44.1/16 and not 48/16?
Good question. They *were* recorded at 48, but SF captured them as 44, which I thought was weird at the time but it saved me re-smapling the files. Should I re-sample the chipmunk file to 48 and then back to 44?

First just try changing the sample rate without resampling. Go Process>Resample. Type in the bit rate and make sure the "Set the sample rate only (do not resample)" box is checked. Click 'OK'. Test the recording and see if Alvin & Co are back to normal. Otherwise, I believe you have to re-transfer.

^ I believe you have to re-transfer
Yep ... damn !
+T for the assistance, though. Thanks.
<note to self .. don't believe SF when it says it's saving a 48Hz file as a 44 Hz file>

Done that more times than I care to admit. Did it three times in a row once. Same night I stopped drinking vodka. ;D

i gave up vodka 6 years ago, but it didn't help in this case.
