Title: What is good software for recording to a laptop?

Hi...

I'm thinking of using my laptop as my storage device for taping, but I was wondering if someone could recommend good software to use... "Sound Recorder" sucks!

I'm using Windows XP as my operating system.  Thanks in advance!

I really like audacity for recording. I had a licensed copy of Cool Edit Pro for a while, and when I started recording on the laptop, I tried using it. Big mistake. CEP records audio in one big file, and when you hit the 2gig mark, it just continues recording on the beginning of your file. D'oh! I lost the first hour of a smoking set early in my laptop taping days. Never again.

Audacity records in multiple little chunks of waveforms, so it can only run out of recording time when you run out of hard disc space. It seems to record 24/48 perfectly from my UA5, and has great metering, which my UA5 does not. Really great software!

Damn man, $700 for software. I'd like my microphones to cost more than my software before I go the route of Wavelab. I tried it out, it's pretty sweet, but a little rich for my blood at this point in time.

If you are doing multitrack recording, Samplitude would be a better choice.
