Title: DVD Buner Questions (16x write speed vs. 8x write speed)
Post by: F.O.Bean on December 26, 2005, 07:21:28 PM
OK ya'll, I have burned thousands of dvd-r's on my Iomega(Lite-On) 16x dvd burner, use nero for data/audio files and dvd decryptor/dvd shrink for the vids, well, after JUST burning a dvd-r thats is capable of burning 8x, i popped in some new ones i got for xmas, same verbatim brand, ONLY these are 16x write speed dvd-r

so what the hell? is there a way i can make dvd decryptor/dvd shrink actually burn on these 16x dvd-r's ??? they spit them right out after write errors are detected in both dvd shrink/decryptor, and in dvd decryptor, it only shows the dvd-r's capable of only handling up to 4x speed

so i checked the 4x write option and still spit it out ???

i have 200 of these blanks, so this is not a good sign

do i need to do some update or something? i already tried to update the driver of the dvd burner but no luck, its up to date

thanks,
bean

use Nero info tools to see what the manufacturer of the CD is (it may not be the same as what you just had, even though they were both Verbatim).

Then check it against this website:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

good luck, i know that stuff can be very frustrating.

I always get Taiyo Yuden from rima.com I paid $17 for a spindle of 50.  They were supposed to be 8x, but they actually do 12x.

tehyre def diff manufacturers :'(

my drive is rated at 16x for DVD-R, no clue why its spitting them out and everytime i use one, it says max write speed is 4x instead of 16x ???

update the burner firmware   ???

ive tried to update the drivers, how does one find a newer firmware ???

I searched on Iomega's site but couldnt find any newer firmware for the 16x dvd-r's, there is however newer firmware for 8x and 4x copying

so maybe i should d/l the 8x and hopefully it has some updates ???

bean:

Your screenshot shows that your iomega drive's really a Lite-On sohw-1633s.  Lite-on's website shows the below to be the current firmware for your drive -- released just before christmas to "match more media" -- I strongly suspect that flashing your drive to this firmware will allow it to recognize your disks.

Darrin-YOU FREAKIN RULE

I got it to download in IE and it only took 5 mins mAX

only thing, my drive must NOT be capable of burning 16x yet, cause the max speed they'll go is 8x, I guess thats good enuf for awhile tho ;D but 16x data copting is appealing ;D 8)

cant thank you enuf man, recognized it immediately and burning a data dvd right now HUGE +T

I think my burner might be regulated up to 16x too, but I still burn at 2x.  Call me old fashioned.  I just started burning cds at 24x.

I swear I've read in the past that you have better burns at slower speeds, so I stick with slower speeds for peace of mind.

thats what md5's are for my friend ;)

I burn at 8x data stuff and even my dvd's cause i verify those in dvd decryptor, never really had bad ones when doin 8x, YMMV tho

and the reason I cant do 16x is because the only way my drive will write at 16x is w/ DVD+R and I have DVD-R

'I may take back a few hundred i got for xmas and get some DVD+R ones, but im a fan of uniformity, and every DVD of flacs I have is on DVD-R so..............

yeah, I only do dvd-r too.  I think I read the thing about slower burning speeds when I first started burning Dreamcast games, heard it again when burning xbox games.  *shrug*  its usually not a big deal though, I feel I can wait 25 minutes for a dvd to get done burning.

when i burn/verify in nero express, it takes me anywhere from 16-24 mins to burn at 8x

10 mins would be nice tho 8)

mines usually 25-30 minutes with burn/verify.  I usually don't pay too much attention, maybe I'll have to next time I burn something.

no reason at all to verify with nero.  run the md5s and or test the ffp's.  takes way less time and it does all you need it to do.  glad you got it worked out.  99% of the time these type of things are firmware.  I just got a new laptop.  the burner was suppsoed to be 8x dvd and 24x cds.  well cds would only burn at 8x even though it said 24x.  dvds all I made were coasters.  new firmware and it works like a champ.

Those are not coasters.  You can cut them up and glue them to a ball.  Now you have your own disco ball.
