Title: mkw for XP SP2 fix
Post by: Scooter on December 28, 2005, 12:39:55 AM
mkw crashes when making .shn files on XP with SP2, and append seek files is checked.  this fixes the problem...  rename this file to".reg" extension and double click.  it appears that i cannot attach it as a ".reg" file...

i know, i know...  if i keep all my 16b stuff in shn, and 24b in flac, it's just easier for me that way 8).

try this:

gd1969-03-01.flac16

gm2005-10-29.flac24

now you got it simple.

Flac compresses smaller, is open source and you won't be stuck with that underdeveloped, dead on the vine, mkw app.
(not to mention metadata and high bitrate support)

agreed, using 2 diff programs for the same thing, just diff bitrate is way overkill IMO, and flac is da bomb, and what i like best, it doesnt decode thru errors :)

juts make an md5 of your flac16/24 folder and check that on occassion

Scooter - dBpowerAMP Music Converter (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm) provides a free, fast, easy way to convert all your SHN files directly to FLAC - no need to convert SHN > WAV > FLAC manually.  I used to maintain both SHN and FLAC, but I crunched all my SHN directly to FLAC over two nights while I slept and now only have one app/format with which to deal.  Nice, IMO.

ok, im super-anal about this stuff, it kind of irks me that you cant watch the files verify and whatnot like frontend, but damn if going SHN>FLAC isnt the shit

has anyone had any bad experiences going from SHN>FLAC in dbpoweramp?

thanks,
Bean

yeah wondering the same... is DBpoweramp reliable to do a pure SHN > FLAC conversion?

you know you can use shntool to do shn > flac (assuming the *.exe files are all in the right place)...

(from the command prompt)
1 - cd to the shn dir
2 - shntool conv -o flac *.shn

hth

iirc, dbpoweramp historically has done some strange things to files when processing. i have never used it, as i think fb2k owns the media player market (been using it for years)...

I converted around 40 GB worth of SHN to FLAC and encountered no problems.  I tested the first handful of conversions - verified the SHN MD5s, extracted and created MD5s for the WAVs, encoded to FLAC, decoded back to WAV and verified the MD5s.  No problems, so I pressed ahead with converting all my SHNs.  FWIW.

DBpowerAMP's media player and file converter are separate programs - do you recall whether the "strange things" occurred with the player or with the file converter?  I agree on FB2K for media player - love it.

i'm giving this a go now.  Since i have started using flac haven't looked back at .shn.  Plus it never seems to run right

not sure. i know that it had the same problems winamp and the others have on playback, and i was always weary of using the file converter (and heard the woes of others, but really didnt pay alot of atention because i always use shntool or the flac frontend). but if you have run the verifications, and they all check out OK, then you are good...

fwiw - i would use the shntool md5 for verification, as tis should be the same as the ffp. md5s include header information. but if you are anal, you might want to do both (which is what i would do when using anything other than shntool)...

(edited to make sense :P)

now if dbpoweramp could fix sector boundary errors, idf be all over it ;)

it did seem to work nicely, i also did what brian did, checked md5's for wavs/flacs/shns, and all seemed fine :)

i only checked the flacs, everything tested fine.  Will probably test wav's when i get some space back on my drive

Someone mentioned FB2k as their media player... I love it and have even found it quite reliable for shn > flac. All of my conversions have checked out just fine so I convert with confidence.

Never used dbPoweramp so i can't really give a comparison and I do like the sound of the greater scripting... but foobar handles things pretty well, and i can even generate metatags from an etree standard txt file...
