Title: mp2 > modsbm1 VS 722 - comp files posted
Post by: hoyt on January 06, 2006, 01:50:19 PM
I got my 722 and kept the old stuff around for a while to do some comparisons.  Here are two tracks from a recent Dave Matthews Band show.  Track 1 is louder and more bassy, Track 2 is a quieter, acoustic sound.  The source info is:

mbho 603/ka200n > 722 (24/96) > Wavelab dither and resample
mbho 603/ka200n > mp2 > Oade Mod SBM1 > d100

I took these samples and normalized them in Wavelab so the volumes were comparable.  For this show I was too close to the speakers, but oh well.  Row 1, stand at ~13 feet, mics AB.

If you have a way to better host ~100 meg of these files and not use yousendit, let me know and I'll change the download links.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comparison.  I just went from 184 -> mp2 -> modsbm1 over to 184 -> 722 so this is perfect.  It's VERY hard to tell the difference but I believe I like source b better as its bass seems to be a bit more defined for me.

I just updated the links in case they had timed out.  I see there are a few votes in there, but we need more opinions :)

I'm withholding my thoughts because I don't want to sway anyone.

Source B sounds a bit clearer in the high end, but is lacking some of the heavy bottom, which leads me to believe it's the 722 source. The only thing I've ever heard that'll give the MBHOs enough bottom end is an MP2, so Source A is MP2>(mod)SBM1...right?

Of course I'm probably talking out of my ass...

I'll give it away, but I'll hide it incase you want to hear for your own ears.  Interesting comments from Nick and Mike.  And for the record, I like the change I made for both the sonic and convenience factors.

I actually much prefer Source A.

I don't wanna give anything away for those who haven't listened yet, but see my original post...
